College Senior Gauging Consulting Entry
Hi everyone,
First-time poster but a big fan of WSO - it's helpful to hear the banter about consulting. I'm an incoming senior at a semi-target, doing a joint bs/ms in industrial/systems engineering. I'm pretty set on breaking into MC, and have been doing a lot of research and have had a few dozen conversations with consultants to get a clear picture of the industry and the firms. My question is, which firms (MBB, T2, B4) are more likely to hire people with an engineering background, and how much does having a master's straight out of undergrad help? I know it's not an MBA, but I hope it would be worth something.
thanks gents
Hi christianmacart, whoops, looks like nobody chimed in here.... maybe one of these discussions below is relevant:
Hope that helps.
I think all the consulting firms will view an engineering major as favorable to an equal degree.
In terms of if a master's would help, I'm not too sure so take it with a grain of salt, but my guess is that you'd probably have a higher chance of breaking in in your undergrad years (assuming you don't get your masters at a better school) because I believe most consulting hires flow from undergrad and MBA.
But is industrial engineering real Stem though? At least OW has a preference for hard Stem majors IF you aren't at a target
If you have a good GPA, then a joint bs/ms is probably viewed positively in terms of academic rigor (assuming you will graduate with the MS next year, not have to do an additional year to complete it). But I doubt it would make or break your application. My understanding of consulting recruiting at semi-targets is that you need a 3.7+, maybe 3.8+, and good internships along with substantial networking to score a first round.
Good luck!
