Lmfao it's through those threads that I'm here. I've seen a lot of people praise UVA and call it a solidified target, but at the same time have seen some people subdue it's prestige and question it's target status. Only from seeing that I wrote up this post lol.

Don't do the loans, my dude. Don't you dare. Not even worth it in the slightest. Congrats on getting into UVA. Culturally, it's an awesome place to be as well so enjoy it. You'll have a ton of fun. Just remember to crush the grades because target schools, and this goes for any caliber of target, are only targets for the top students. There is no room at the table for poor students unless you are very well connected.

How does what school you go to not matter? Obviously what we do with our time matters, but being at a target school allows us so many more opportunities. And if the school we don't go to matters, why the fuck are u posting about transferring schools lmfao.

I'm transferring schools because I dont like the one where I'm at, not because I want a "target" school. I'm a non target and already secured IB SA roles. I could care less about prestige. The school you go to doesn't matter. At the end of the day we may start at different places but we will all end up in the same place, school just gives you a head start.

It does not matter, you seem to have this idea that going to a target will automatically land you an internship but when I had my Superdays, I was up against Wharton, Columbia, Yale, Harvard students and at the end of the day I ended up getting the offer not them because: I was prepared, I studied technicals and behaviorals, knew what I wanted and why.

They all were very cocky and believed they would get it effortlessly because of their school, which is not true.

Your school does not matter

This shouldn't be news to anyone...but they both matter. Targets give you access (or more access) to opportunities. They just do. Guess what, If GS or MBB doesn't actively recruit from your school, much harder to land there (not impossible but harder). However, regardless of where you attend, you need to put in the effort, stand out, do interesting things, etc. Top BBs recruit from tons of schools but a significant percentage come from about 20 or so. So total non target may have 1 or 2 per yr (probably 1 every other yr) because the kid forced it where as the top schools send10-50 depending each yr depending on their size. Be careful though. At a target (and UVA does great!), it's not as simple as standing in line and getting your offer. You're competing with top kids from your and other top schools. However, the process is far easier to access with planned info sessions, coffee chats, recruiting workshops, job fairs. and alumni channels. Much easier to get an interview. Then it's up to you. Same in consulting.

This sounds incredibly naive and foolish.

Yes, generally, your performance on the job would likely be the same if you came out of (for example) Harvard or NC State for UG, all things being equal.

At the end of the day, 3rd parties can only open the door. You have to be the one to walk through it.

That being many NC State alumni have access or the ability to open those life changing doors vs Harvard alumni?

Current student there. The answer is 100% yes. Shit ton of kids go into banking, EB, BB, MM, boutiques everywhere. Also a target for consulting if thats your thing, a guy that built out multiple practices at an MBB (mcintire grad too) literally came and shot the shit with my club for an hour. What's more important than all that though is the experience you're going to have, and it will be fucking awesome. I love UVA, couldn't picture myself anywhere else, and am immensely grateful that I get to attend. You will not regret coming to UVA one bit, don't let these finance nerds tell you otherwise just cuz it may be marginally more difficult to recruit for MF PE and CVP (who the fuck cares anyways). Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks man appreciate it. Can you give me any insight on the finance clubs? Specifically MII or AIF? I've heard the students that are involved in these are usually the ones with the strongest placement. How does the recruiting process for these work exactly? Again, thanks for the help.

Jan 2, 2022 - 10:03pm

MII, AIF, and Akpsi are the best finance clubs. You will have to go to the club fair and sign up to get into the interview process. Interview process is pretty competitive. I'm in one of the top consulting clubs and I think the acceptance rate was around 7% or something like that, and I know the finance clubs are the same way. I think if you don't land one of the top clubs it won't necessarily hurt your recruiting, you still have the same brand and network, but I have heard that there are some club specific pipelines (cannot confirm it 100% though)

Amazing banking/consulting placement, decent buy-side placement out of school (just a handful). Not a "hypertarget" like some kids have tried to make it seem at all, but very strong. You're fine.

Like other people touched on, you're fine at UVA.

Sure, it might not get you access to some specific processes available to some of the Ivies, but it will never be the reason your application is dismissed. You'll have a great time.

SilverLake, KKR, PJT RSSG, and PWP aren't coming on grounds, but pretty much everything/anything else is fair game + actively recruits at UVA.
