Direct lending - How does it work?

Hi guys, I just read a new article on ii about Blackstone's plans to increase their direct lending business. Anyone willing to explain how companies such as Blackstone, Carlyle or smaller players get their clients? After a brief research on EU markets I came across a case about Ares Capital and a GBP 1 billion financing to U.K. Daisy Group…but again, I cannot fully understand how those guys get deals on the table. I am sure they are not going around asking who needs money, instead someone source them deals, right (who/how)?
