Duff and Phelps IB Chicago M&A summer analyst phone interview

Phone interview on monday. came out of nowhere, was not expecting this. non-target, 3.8, no IB experience. I have two internships in finance on my resume, one in PWM and one in investment operations, however not many transferable skills. They said it will be a 30 minute phone interview with a director. What can i expect? Technicals?

Freaking out, still in shock I got an ib interview. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Given that a director will be interviewing you, it'll probably be mainly fit questions such as why banking, walk me through your resume, why you and not another candidate, etc. Don't be surprised if you get asked 1 or 2 weed out technical questions though. In this job environment it's becoming more common that technicals are asked during first rounds. BTBanker probably says it'll be mostly fit because of the seniority of the person interviewing you. Correct me I'm wrong BT.

With that being said I'd be be surprised if you get asked anything more than high level technicals such as tell me about how you would value a company. Asking these questions should not be scary if you're pretty well prepared. I highly doubt you will get a technical grilling to see where your knowledge bottoms out like you might at a final round interview. Instead, it's just an opportunity to show that you deserve a second round. Stay relaxed and keep it conversational. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

It went pretty well; interviewer mainly talked about D&P/the internship program for 15 minutes then just had me go over my resume and past internship experience. Got the Why IB as well as the Why D&P questions as expected, no technicals. I have financial modeling on my resume and he inquired about it but did not ask me anything like Walk me Through a DCF. They said they would respond within a week about 2nd/final rounds, still haven't heard anything so fingers crossed
