Education Brainstorming - Value Add Ideas
Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone here can help me out with some schooling direction. I am an accountant by background - I have spent 2 years in audit based consulting (Big 4) and and two years working in tax/wealth management for a small shop group (accounting and financial advisor). I passed my CPA exams a few years back; however, I cannot become licensed until I obtain 150 college units and I'm at 138. Four classes isn't much, but I have waited on the education as I always come back to the point that basket weaving at a local community is a waste of life's most precious resource - time.
With that in mind, I'm having a hard time coming to grips with other options. I passed the CFP test for my current job and it's stoked my interest more than the accounting work I've done in the past. I really enjoy following the markets and potentially would like to learn more finance with the 12 units (or more for any given program).
Does anyone have any good ideas on schools/courses I should consider? I feel like an MFIN, say Vandy, would be interesting and a lot of fun at this point in life, but for a guy in his mid 20s may not be the most sensible option given the cost and the fact it may not provide higher earning potential. I also understand those courses may be more in line with corporate finance/banking as well, which could just lead to more career paths/ideas, which may just make things harder moving forward...
More in line with the financial advising path specifically, I would say education in insurance/estates/portfolio management would be beneficial - portfolio management being the most interesting in my mind. Does anyone know of schools/programs where I could potentially drop in and fill credits w/ portfolio management type courses?
My current employer is ok with me leaving the workforce to knock out the courses so I'm open to relocating for schooling, online courses, taking a semester of courses, etc. I have money saved up, so I'm not worried about that. Just want a good experience, potentially try living somewhere new and exciting.
Thanks!
