Bocconi, HSG or SSE for undergrad?
Hello. I recently got admitted to Bocconi BESS, St. Gallen and awaiting reply from SSE Business & Economics (I will most likely get in). Which of these schools will position me best for IB/PE? I am Swedish and my budget fits all these schools, though I of course wouldn’t mind spending less. I am Swedish, but do not want to work in the long term in Sweden. In Europe London would be preferable but the most ideal is NYC (I imagine internal transfer is the easiest way to get a position there). I feel tired of Stockholm and have lived here all my life, but I am thinking of going to SSE because it feels easier to get top positions since I am Swedish and the university is highly regarded in the country. Later on I could transfer to London/NYC. Would Bocconi/HSG provide a disadvantage for me or open up more opportunities? More people go there so it feels harder to stand out, though I would appreciate a change in environment.
Would greatly appreciate tips!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
Bocconi University (BESS): Bocconi is a powerhouse for finance and economics in Europe, with a strong reputation for placing graduates into top investment banking (IB) and private equity (PE) roles, particularly in London. Its alumni network is extensive across Europe, and the school is well-regarded by major banks and consulting firms. However, competition among Bocconi graduates is fierce due to the large class sizes, so standing out will require strong academic performance and extracurricular involvement.
University of St. Gallen (HSG): HSG is another top-tier institution, especially for finance and business. It has a smaller, more exclusive alumni network compared to Bocconi, but it is highly respected in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and London. HSG's reputation for rigorous academics and its focus on finance make it a strong contender for IB/PE roles. Additionally, its smaller class sizes might make it easier to stand out.
Stockholm School of Economics (SSE): SSE is highly regarded in Sweden and the Nordic region, with a strong track record of placing graduates into top roles in Stockholm and occasionally London. As a Swedish national, attending SSE could give you a home-field advantage for internships and early career opportunities in Sweden. However, its international reach, particularly for NYC or London, is not as strong as Bocconi or HSG.
Key Considerations:
Recommendation:
If your ultimate goal is to work in London or NYC, Bocconi or HSG would likely position you better than SSE due to their stronger international reputations and networks. Between Bocconi and HSG, consider whether you prefer the dynamic, international environment of Milan or the more focused, academically rigorous setting of St. Gallen. Both are excellent choices for breaking into IB/PE.

Both HSG and Bocconi will give you equal shot for London IB given you're not Italian or German/Swiss.
Go where you think you'll enjoy the most.
HSG stronger. Gives you access to the swiss market and the london one. Then SSE/Bocconi both don't give you access to a strong secondary market with either strong salaries and/or the fact you don't need a local language...
Is it possible to land a job though in Switzerland with no German proficiency? I speak Swedish
