Esade MSc Finance to Investment Banking?
Well, I accepted the Esade offer today and I'm really excited to start preparing from now. I also registered for CFA level 2, purely out of interest.
My main concern is the limited number of London Investment Banking recruits from Esade. I will certainly face an uphill battle just trying to get an interview; furthermore, things are even more complicated with my lack of work experience.
So It's only reasonable to ask: is there any hope I could reach an IB (or equity research) position in London from Esade? Please feel free to preach your wisdom, I think I really need it.
why not em lyon? Actually know quite a few from that school working in IB
EMLYON is crap
I mean nothing beats Bocconi and HEC Paris from abroad but I, for some reason have come across a fair number of EM Lyon students also in IB, however this could just be totally anecdotal.
Esade is a top target school in Spain and many UK based banks have recruited from there in the past. There might be some challenges now hiring European grads due to Brexit, but I’m sure it’s still possible if you’re proactive and resourceful. Try networking with alums who are in the industry (there are quite a few) and use that to get an edge in your applications
Based on how OP is focusing on London I am somewhat sure he doesn’t speak Spanish, which is a must for Spain (you also need to have a bilingual/ native level)
I can speak Spanish, but yeah it's not bilingual proficiency.
Doesn't make much sense to complain once you've already accepted Esade's offer...
Is the best school for London IB/ER? No
Is it possible to break in? Yes, defo
Start networking ASAP, prepare your apps, don't fail the tests, try to know the HV questions in advance and brush up the technicals... I'm sure you will do well.

If you don’t have any internships and are aiming to get a full time job in London it will be difficult to get IBD regardless of whether you are at the top 1-2 or top 5-6 EMEA school
If you have decent experience and Esade on your CV you should get first round interviews, as people mentioned above this is one of the target schools. But it’s not all about the school here
can part-time internships during my studies help with the lack of experience? I heard students do actually take good internships there
No reason why it wouldn’t help, this is still work experience, especially if in M&A / PE. I guess the caviat is if you do a MSc Finance you will be very busy with applications also + you will likely need to speak the local language to work in Spain alongside your studies
ESADE is a great uni and target for most banks. If you want to increase your chances of landing a job in IB, you should:
1) try to get a part time job in a related field (small boutique, small PE, etc.) whatever that can give you a bit of experience to be relevant for IB when you apply. Be creative: a lot of people are working from home so it could even be something in a different city, unpaid, etc.
2) network. Don’t be shy, contact ex ESADE people who work in IB. Try to engage in short conversations at first and then build rapport, the tips that you can get from alumni who have just joined a bank are super valuable (they can tell you about the finance clubs at uni, how to get into them, how to apply to IBs, etc.). This is a numbers game, most people will ignore you (don’t take personally), so just cast your net wide.
I would forget about CFA level 2. Its probably interesting but not the most efficient use of your time. If you spend the same time instead to prepare applications and network, your odds of landing a job in IB will be quite high.
