FEMALES: what to wear to an interview? HELP!

I was shopping today for a good skirt suit and since I am on a tight budget but want something fitted I went to Express (they have suits for around $250). I bought a light gray skirt suit with light navy pinstripes. It fits me very nicely but:

1) Is light gray a good color? 2) It's striped - should I get it in a solid color? 3) They have the same suit in black - is it a good idea to wear an all black suit - I don't want to be overbearing. 4) I plan on wearing suspenders underneath with the skirt. If I take the jacket off, are suspenders ok?

Since I'm going to probably wear this suit to all my interviews I just want to make the right choice.

5) Besides the usual black, navy, charcoal, tan etc suits, is CREAM / off white suits ok?

Also for business casual events:

1) are floral skirts, non-collar shirts, once piece dresses ok? how fashionable can you be when you are "business casual"

as long as it has good cleavage you're good to go

I tend to go conservative when it comes to interviews. Black suit with a light-colored shirt or top on the inside plays it safe. As for business casual, a knee-length dress with a neckline that doesn't show too much skin coupled with a black cardigan and heels. Never wear peep-toes!! Good luck. :)

yup, the logic is simple:

90% of the time, you're interviewing with men, 9% women, and 1% trannies [+ unknown category]. men like cleavage, it's genetic. if you got dem' big titties, don't be afraid to give us a lil' peek so we can work up some perverse fantasies. sounds weird, but it will help you out.

if you're flat as a board - let's hope you have a wunderfuuuuuuuul personality

I can see your point:

Dress conservative and ace the interview -> 100% chance of offer Dress slutty and ace the interview --> 50% chance of offer bc of slutty dress Dress slutty and suck during the interview --> 50% chance of offer bc of slutty dress Dress conservative and suck during the interview --> 0% chance of offer

hmm.. depends on your cup size, it's much much easier to pass the test and dress more covered up if you're stacked on top b/c you're more curvaceous

of course form fitting and curvy clothes will definitely if you're tall and you have nice legs, but it's probably more uncomfortable and not as easy as showing a bit of the good ol' coin slot.

i recommend that if you're going for the conservative look, be sure to bite your bottom lip once or twice during the interview

1) Is light gray a good color? how light? charcoal is great

2) It's striped - should I get it in a solid color? subtle stripes ok. big bold stripes not ok.

3) They have the same suit in black - is it a good idea to wear an all black suit - I don't want to be overbearing. i've worn all black skirt suits or charcoal skirt suits and gotten offers in both.

4) I plan on wearing suspenders underneath with the skirt. If I take the jacket off, are suspenders ok? no suspenders. you are not gordon gekko.

Since I'm going to probably wear this suit to all my interviews I just want to make the right choice.

5) Besides the usual black, navy, charcoal, tan etc suits, is CREAM / off white suits ok? no, especially not at an interview

Thanks - what about a wrap dress (solid colors?)

Also for business casual events:

1) are floral skirts, non-collar shirts, once piece dresses ok? how fashionable can you be when you are "business casual" - floral skirts should not be crazy like lily pulitzer. go for a bigger print in darker shades in non-cotton - non collar shirts that are silk blouses as a sleeveless shell to go under a jacket or cardigan ok - one piece dresses should be sharp. I have some in the basic colors - charcoal, black, tan and white shifts.

good luck!

Define "light gray". Charcoal is best.

Have to agree with an above poster -- no bold stripes.

If you don't want to do black, do charcoal or navy instead. Both are acceptable. Cream is never an acceptable color for a suit. Don't wear suits made of denim either. (I've seen this, its horrible.)

A wrap dress could be okay depending on the fabric and yes, solid neutral color is the way to go. Shift dresses are good too.

Floral definitely depends on how flowery it is. I tend to veer away from that stuff because I don't want to make a mistake. Non-collar shirts are okay. And I definitely wouldn't try to be too fashionable when dressed in business casual because you don't want to be taken less seriously than your male peers. Its often that guys can get away with being dressed worse, but women can't and a lot of women also aren't willing to point out to another female when she's not dressed appropriately. There are more choices in term of clothes for us, but that also means more chances to make a mistake in dressing.

skirt suits are considered business formal for women while pant suits are more casual.

LadyEva - I agree with she_monkey on the fabric choices, nothing too clingy. Maybe you could also wear it with a blazer?

Thanks for enlightening me - my unsmart friends nearly ruined my interviews; they said it should be 3-4 inches above the knee...

touchmeThanks for enlightening me - my unsmart friends nearly ruined my interviews; they said it should be 3-4 inches above the knee...

almost had that happen to me as well...

anyway- i agree with what was said about shoes- kitten heels make you shorter, but they are also fugly and unpolished. I think as long as it's 3" or below, you're fine regardless of height. (well unless you're >5'9" I guess)

lol Well, maybe shorter: 5'11-6'0 range.

Venus Williams, Brooke Shields, Anna Nicole Smith, Rebecca Romijn, Uma Thurman are about the same size too give or take. Also I think Michelle Obama is close to 6' - that woman is definitely tall with heels.

for informational interviews, i would go with an unbuttoned black suit with a white shirt. for decoration, i ll wear an hermes scarf hanging inside....not tied---perfect length, subtle color, conservative pattern.

for formal ones, i go with suit&skirt with pointy heels.

i think the key is to wear good heels for women. nothing is sexier than the red sole of the classic collection of christian louboutin. however its too high, and there's platform in it, which may not be suitable for office. other than that, there's really no specific brand to go for. go for something you like and make you confident.

suspendersif you're hot, then as little as possible. Nothing under the peacoat?

What, are we auditioning for a porn? lol Since you guys are so curious about female attire, let me ask you this - would you feel threatened by taller women?Does the male ego get bruised if you're shorter? Please, I'm serious.

First, whoa, you ARE tall! Agree a bit with amande-- I feel crappy if I'm in crappy shoes. I love silk scarves with business wear... obviously not to an interview, but it makes an otherwise boring outfit appropriate and fashionable.

Shoes: Loubs have low heels (~3") but I might be a little careful about wearing things that are very obviously-expensive/flashy, i.e. the red soles of CL, monograms on purses. I'd pick up a pair of more "discreet" designer shoes if you have the cash to blow-- Choos, Manolos. Lower price range: Cole Haan air is decent, but Calvin Klein is also incorporating cushioned heels for 1/2 the price.

I have been told to not worry about wearing high heels because a tall woman subconsciously sends the message that she's more tough/able to do the job. So maybe I wouldn't feel the need to wear flats or kitten heels. Just make sure it's appropriate (3" or less for tall girls, I think 3.5-4" are okay for girls below 5'4"...correct me if I'm wrong)

I'm interested in hearing from the guys about interviewing or working with an extra tall woman.

Thanks, she monkey. I've decided to go with high heels. Come to think of it, many male bankers I know are slightly taller - so I should be fine.
