Finish this sentence, more than one sentence is welcomed.....(Don't be an investment banker if you)

.....and do the opposite as well, .....(Try to be an investment banker if...)...I'm a 17 year old considering IB as career option so it'll be interesting to see what list you come up with

Don't be an investment banker if you are like me:

-can't sit still for more than 1 hour without getting bored -if you want a life - there are other ways to make money -are a social ass, not a quiet ass like most investment bankers -if you want to hate your life, (90% of my friends hate their lives and they are under a year into it, I took it as a hint to not take my offer -don't want to die before 60 -dont want to be like half the kids on this forum that need a life

don't be an investment banker if:
  • you don't like:

-money -prestige -women

who cares about prestige? Money can be made everywhere

be a banker if:

  • you want to be in finance possibly for the long run
  • want great exit ops (PE, HF, Corp roles, VC, entrenprenuer- transferable soft skills from IB to business)
  • want to learn more about the markets, corporations, how and why big companies make decisions

those 3 should be enough of a reason to be in banking. money prestige/women can be found other ways.

talk to actual bankers if possible, not just people on here (including myself) that are still in school and not FT bankers.

best of luck

I have to disagree honestly. There are much more efficient/more productive ways to get into PE/VC etc

Enjoy the boutique brah

since you wanted to play the hating game, good luck trying to get into NYC for IB - many of my friends went to USC and they all said they would never go there again for east coast recruiting.

It is a great school no doubt, but there complaint was many people confused it for South Carolina unknowingly

so I say again, enjoy the boutique, because they are the only places my friends could get into with 3.5+ GPA's and great internships. Sad part is I am being serious

Don't be an investment banker if you... actually like math.

The amount of math you do is shameful, even though trading isn't always much better.

As in?....

this is the problem I have with this forum.

Think dude, do you really think all VCs, PE's hire people out of banking? No they don't. They are much more interested in people that have done more than make copies all day (this is a quote by a VC partner who was ranting about investment bankers)

Go work in a corporation, get some side experience whether it be in classes or what not, better yet show interest in a specific area, say biotech, go get your MBA, and you will get in.

NO ONE THINKS OUTSIDE THE BOX ON THIS FORUM

Seriously, I am thankful I didn't go into IB, the people are so set on just making money they lose half their life, when in reality there are tons of other ways to make money enjoying life a lot more.

When people say, money doesn't buy happiness, and you see investment bankers say "working at the boutique was better because of the hours even though I took a hit in pay" listen to it.

seriously dude. think.

get your damn head out of your ass being like such as? please help me figure this out because I think for myself

think you freaking idiot

no wonder you are monkeys

You mad bro? You jelly?

Experience says that people that hate banking without doing it FT personally, are generally those that couldnt break into a shop. So i repeat, you mad bro? Jelly?

didn't mean to rant but here

one example (low on time - but there are others like this I know)

mid sized insurance firm - did very well there, got into a management role -----> a few classes at UCLA in biotech ----> MBA ----- VC done

I don't understand why all the hate for Binary_Bankster; he brings up pretty valid points.

Last time I remember someone started a thread (was on the homepage) about being happy with their IB gig, most people thought he was trolling.

Someone appreciates me, thanks man.

@USC I am not hating on USC, there are many people who work at BB's who went there, BUT it is not the regular. To think you have an automatic in at USC into a BB is ridiculous. The same could be said for targets as well
