Fortress Investment Group PE
Hi,
Anyone have color on Fortress and their PE group in terms of prestige, comp, culture etc?
Also, anything on what their interviews are like for junior level?

Does anyone have insight on the credit group at Fortress, specifically the Corporate Securities team? Am curious about size, structure and culture of the team. Thanks in advance!
From my dealings with them that have a very wide mandate. Some cool guys workjng there. But I'm talking Europe, doesn't seem as structured as the US perhaps.
wacky group... they really lack an investment style, its more like a long-term hedge fund that'll buy anything under the sun and hold it for 3-5 years... the skillset needed is allover the place...

Is Fortress Investment Group really that bad? (Originally Posted: 03/13/2013)
I see a ton of posts about how the work at FIG is boring and pigeonholes you, yet the people there seem smart, driven and ambitious. Is there something I'm missing?

I have been interning there for 3 straight years, definetly not a sweatshop, I would go with the latter.

I'm interested in peoples' views on Fortress - is it a soul-destroying sweatshop or is it a cool place to work with smart people and good deal flow?
Like any other job: wear a suit the first day (take off jacket and even tie if you're overdressed) then dress like the junior guys from then on. Stay until everyone more senior than you leaves every day. Take every task given to you very seriously and have a positive attitude. No need to study up on excel as long as you know the basics.
Thanks, Oreos! Anyone else have a view?
Feel free to share......interested in any type of info, especially if it is DBSO related
lol, maybe you should man up and get them to give you a full-time contract - do you wanna be an intern all your life!?
Laughing too hard right now 10/10
Also interested in hearing views on FIG credit - considered to be a high calibre place? How does it compare Oaktree / Avenue Capital / GSO?
thanks. any other views?
Was 18 an hour plus time and half overtime. Are you in San Fran?

maybe he's still in college and has held this internship since his frosh yr.... that, of course, would imply either:
1) he wasn't in an investing role in the first 1 or 2 years and was fully back-office/support OR 2) he's hooked up
Their strategy: buy and hold for over 10 years.
All the wannabe trolls should bookmark this post. THIS is funny.

I generally have a positive perception of FIG having worked with them in the past. They are certainly as aggressive as any of the other big guys.
This is gold.
i'm going for hooked up
My buddy left Fortress about a year ago and base salaries were around $110k. If you were good, your bonus would be at least $50k. http://www.hedgetracker.com/fund/Fortress-Investment-Group
LOL
How many people do they have working in PE groups vs. public equity hedge funds?
Was that for a post-banking/pre-MBA analyst?
Oh, you...
3 years still an undergrad
comp is nothing attractive.
if you want to go buyside, its a good opp. but if you want more money, banking right now pays more.
down the road, who knows.
Best by far.
What's the culture like? Are the various funds structured with multiple internal desks/PMs like a SAC?
awesome
After banking - not many HF shops pay you much more if you have a MBA
I thought DBSO and the credit funds were moving to San Fran? Whats the position your looking at?
Bump this old thread.... the Credit platform is in SF and seems to be doing well. Good place to work? Culture?
Bumpity Bumpppp
Is anyone familiar with their London operations?
I worked at Fortress in an internship, nothing but great things to say about the place. Pete Briger is a genius, and he literally talks to Steve Mnuchin everyday. The other top guys, (Tom (RE) Drew Josh and Dean) are also very smart, connected and understanding. They will however expect the best- Fortress is an incredibly prestigious shop (probably top 10) and take guys from Blackstone all the time because they aren’t “top heavy” and have a lot of advancement. Hours can be tough on live deals.. in SF I’d say when not totally jammed, hours are 6:45- 5 on the weekdays. It’s nice to see the partners and CIOs get in early though- when I worked there the guys I mentioned were always first in the office and first to leave. (Sometimes even around 1-2, arriving at 5am). The associates I worked with there were chill too, lots of athletes.
I interned there. Nothing but great things to say about the place. The top guy, Pete Briger, is a genius and I feel like he talks to Steve Mnuchin like everyday. Other CIOs ( Drew, Josh, Dean, Tom (REPE)) are also very smart and connected. Their funds have been some of the best performers in the past 12 years. Great culture with a lot of athletes, but it can be a grind on live deals. If you are not totally jammed up, Id say the hours for the SF office are 6:30 to 5... Generally speaking the top guys come in very early (like 5:30) and are out by 3. For prestige I'd say its top 8, for performance its top 5, intern salary was 28 an hour for a rising junior I heard base salary for associate is 140k (not great), lots of advancement opportunities.
When I interned, they told me the associate test for interviews (RE interviews) is modeling out a real estate transaction with cap, multiple, leverage, in under 3 hours or 1 hour... I forget. Dont know about credit funds, although I worked there too.
Thanks a lot! Any chance you could give some info on credit fund case study? Would be highly appreciated!
Wish I knew... Ill tell you this much. Its mostly known for its distressed credit investing (probably raising 3 bill+ fund rn).. So if I had to guess it would be modeling out a distressed credit investment which could include equity, 10-12% interest rate, and probably no coupon payments for the first year or so... Could be long term deal- maybe even up to 10 years. Direct origination most likely, I would be very surprised if it were a secondary purchase.. If you are getting a case study that's probably a pretty good sign. I know my group did at least 1st 2nd and 3rd round interview. Do be aware though, from submitting your CV to receiving an offer the acceptance rate is well below 1%. Happy to answer any other questions if you have them. (I would add AMAZING SF AND to some degree NYC office.. Seriously, SF it is the top 3 floors at the nicest building RIGHT in from of the ferry building with Bay bridge and Golden gate views. (like every desk can see the bay bridge- even my intern terminal. NYC is much larger office, like 1. block from central park and 4 blocks from the Apple store... Decent free snack bar and of course coffee/sodas etc. Im really giving too much info, sorry ignore the last half of that
I literally just wrote a giant review on this firm and application process... all in all very good, and very respected, connected, smart, leadership. Can be a grind when on a live deal but other than that 10-12 hour days for associates. (of course 24 hours for emails) Awesome offices, particularly SF.. fuck me it was nice..
I interned there btw
