from mining gaint to MBB
I am currently working for a giant mining company in Australia. I am part of the gradaute program and working in a valuation and analysis team (first rotation- 8 month in). I have commenced my CFA level 1 study and will take the test in a few days.
My BCOM results are not great- approx 3.0 GPA (US).
i would like to ask you guys whether you think i can break into MBB in 1-2 years with my mining exp or will I have to tackle an MBA first?
Any help would be appreciated
Very possible to move into a mining / minerals / resources group. Your grades shouldn't be too much of a problem: you're going to know a hell of a lot more than the early 20 something twerps you're competing against. What part of the business are you in, and what does your company mine?
Keep in mind that UFO is chronically on the brighter side with topics like this, simply because he hopes he can break in similarly himself. =0
In all seriousness, someone very close to me is going from mining / minerals BB IBD to oil/gas exploratory...because they stand to make fuckloads more money on a discovery and it's more exciting. A lot of people they used to work with came out of the mining/energy industry and/or had Phd's in resources...and knew a hell of a lot more about the industry than the morons coming out of bschool. They had nothing against the MBAs, but coursework in financial modelling does not really give the knowledge base to value dozens of different types of coal mines or really understand what developing a mineral deposit really entails.
And yes, I'm always looking on the bright side. It's hard enough to break in, and there's enough dumbasses out there saying "it can't be done" about any dream you have. I like to think I'm the guy that helps people get where they want to go, even if it's just moral support...maybe because I never had that and I know how much it can help.
I also realize that in most cases, it comes down to what a person wants and believes is possible. Probably a dozen people have told the poster that it's not possible. People do what they think they can. If I can make the case that even if the chances are maybe not the best in the world but are definitely within the realm of reasonably possible, then I will have accomplished my goal.
For what it's worth, my chances were about 0.00001% and I had zero help and found a job...and I'm convinced that ANYONE can if they really want to. Naysayers really piss me off. Anything is possible, but if people believe they can't then they won't even put out the effort.
^in Jesus name we pray. Amen
Hey, there's nothing wrong with aiming high. What's the worst you can lose? Ending up at the status quo.
You totally have the industry experience; I'm sure you can PM a few people experienced in those industries and get a specific perspective.
I am a Marketing major from a non-target and had an internship at an advertising agency before I ended up getting my offer in Strategy and Transformation consulting. People said it couldn't be done but I still plowed through. You just need a strategic approach to get in and differentiate yourself. Good luck, and keep looking at the bright side!
cheers for the advice guys. I work at one of the big aussie diversified miners. Is there anyone here who actually work in MBB that i can speak/PM to?
Thanks again.
Playful jabs, bro.
my guess is 0%
To be brutally honest I think it's going to be very hard for you to break into MBB. Competition is very tough and 3.0/4 is a low GPA (especially for a Com degree).
Concentrate on being a star in your current role. If you ever work with consultants be sure to do a good job and impress them too :)
