Global Cyber Attack: Have you been hit?
Hello monkeys,
Seems like a shitstorm out there with the Ransomware cyber-attack. Article can be read here
More than 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries have so far been infected, according to the European Union’s law enforcement agency. The malware, using a technique purportedly stolen from the U.S. National Security Agency, affected the U.K.’s National Health Service, Russia’s Ministry of Interior, Germany’s Deutsche Bahn rail system, automakers Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA, logistics giant FedEx Corp., and other company and hospital computer systems in countries from Eastern Europe to the U.S. and Asia.
The hackers used the tool to encrypt files within affected computers, making them inaccessible, and demanded ransom -- typically $300 in bitcoin. Russia and Ukraine had a heavy concentration of infections, according to Dutch security company Avast Software BV.
What do you monkeys think is going to happen when you log on your computers later on Monday at work? Any of you already affected by this? Don't forget to update your computer if you're using Windows 10
Short story: A friend of mine accessed PornHub and sadly received the purportedly "screen of death". Couldn't decide whether to pay the "ransom" or format his whole computer...
I sell enterprise Cloud Cybersecurity software so business is booming.
Interesting how the markets didn't even react to this
The 2 cybersecurity ETFs $HAKK and $HAKD barely have any volume.
lol "a friend of mine accessed pornhub"
True story, I don't know if he got it off there or his computer was actually already infected
Don't you have to be running some pretty old OS to have the ransomware on your computer?
From what I know if you got win10 you should be ok. It's the outdated operating systems that stopped receiving official patches from Microsoft that got infected. Even if it were the case, you had to download a file on your computer to actually get infected then the virus would spread into the network the computer was connected to and take advantage of the OS exploit.
^^^^ This
Your friend downloaded and executed "MeetHotSinglesInMyArea.EXE" on his administrator account while neglecting windows updates since March.
Then again he probably wasn't a very bright person lmfao
Microsoft sent an update for the older systems as well, mentioning it was urgent.
However, I have met the kind of people who do not do updates at all, because they are too much of a casual computer users and use it only for facebook or similar and never do updates, so they probably didn't care about that one either.
Too bad for them, I got my update from windows 10, wasted 3 long minutes over it and everything is good.
Should have updated your windows 7, used an anti-malware program, made a back-up so that a re-format would have been an easy solution. I believe the decryptor is now available/ it no longer works (depending on the variant).
Technical Issues or Cyber Attack? (Originally Posted: 07/12/2015)
A lot of things happened over the last few days, the NYSE trading halt being one of them.
It's possible something more than just a "technical issue" took place.
Was there a cyber attack? Will events like this continue to happen?
NYSE Trading Halt
Few are surprised about the Chinese or the Greeks. Anyone who's looked in to those things saw this from a mile away. The other two are a little more interesting. The halt was due to a glitch, and it looks like it didn't really affect anyone so whoop-de-doo. The grounding of flights isn't all that surprising. Happens with trains everyday, communications go down, everyone stops for safety. Nbd. If you're really worried go put on a tinfoil hat and yell the end is night in the streets.
Anon mentioned Wall Street having a rough day before it happened.
Anonymous sent out a cryptic tweet the day before the trading halt:
"Wonder if tomorrow is going to be bad for Wall Street…. we can only hope."
Nevertheless, I doubt it was a cyber attack.
Anyone can make ominous tweets and then draw dubious links to random events.
If it was actually an attack, I think someone would have claimed responsibility for it by now.
Too suspicious: UAL groundings, NYSE technical glitch, WSJ frontpage down....Zero Hedge is religiously 'tin-foil hat'-like in it's reporting but this article was definitely interesting... http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-07-08/what-first-world-cyber-war-loo…
If I remember correctly- ZeroHedge actually went down that morning as well.
Dan, you're right I had forgot to include that; myself and a colleague tried refreshing the ZH page a few times that afternoon to no avail (bad gateway error). The WSJ - major news outlet that's pretty much universally known is one thing. But Zero Hedge though? - That seems like a relatively obscure page to target and is far and away less well known than WSJ..
Just headline hunting, with a vague Tom Clancy-esque theme, "Cyber-attack." Notice how none of the articles get into any specifics about different types of cyber-attacks or how any of the problems line up with a malicious attack.
This is because the media is just as clueless about computers as it is about finance.
