Hec MiM or Bocconi MSc Finance?
Hi everyone, I have a question for you
Since my goal is IB in London, do you think would be better the Hec MiM or the Bocconi Msc Finance?
About the Hec MiM in particular I like the exchange programs with MIT, Berkeley or other top US universities. Farther, during the second year I could do the "International finance" specialization. Therefore I think that although is a MiM program it could be personalized to be very finance focused.
What do you think about it?

Both are top, but if your goal is IB in London, I advice you to take Bocconi. HEC is a very good school, but most of their grads end up staying in the french market, while a biggest number of Bocconi grads tends to go to London.
If you look at Linkedin stats for both schools, you can see that HEC has 2.485 alumni in London, while Bocconi has 4.930, nearly the double. If you look at the biggest Investment Banks, you can see the following:
I am not saing that Bocconi is better in general than HEC; that depends on a lot of factors and each uni has its pros and its cons, but if your goal is IB in London, I think that the decission should be clear. Why? Because both are extremely well regarded by banks, but Bocconi's network in London is twice as HEC's, and networking is a key element in IB recruiting.

That would count as alumni for both unis, as it is not relevant if the alumni studied a BSc or a MSc, you are alunni anyways, so it doesn't count. Maybe some of the bocconi alumni did a msc in HEC, but those count in the stats both as HEC alumni and Bocconi alunni,so there is no distortion.
Same happens with HEC bscs that did a msc at bocconi.
Hey how about IB in the US?
Hey how about IB in the US?
Look at the relative size, not the absolute numbers...
The relative size is nearly the same, HEC has like 75k alumni in Linkedin and Bocconi like 95k, so relatively they are very similar. It is common knowledge that HEC and Bocconi are the top continental european BS and top targets for UK, so given that they are nearly the same, what makes the difference is the network that each has to offer, and they are not even close there, so for me the decission is clear. Even in relative terms Bocconi is better, given that it has approx 30% more alumni than HEC and nearly 100% more alumni network in London.
I repeat that I am not saying that Bocconi is better than HEC, but I think that the numbers are clear, for London IB they have an edge and that edge is a network twice as big as HEC's, which is not a small difference. HEC is a great school, for some people the best school in continental Europe, but we usually don't pay attention to the fact that it is very focused in their local market. You, as a french should know it even better.
I went to HEC and I know that it places equally well in Paris and London. Many want to stay in Paris due to local bonds, others not.
Once I get some tiem I will deep diver but can assure that the alumni size is much larger than what you pretend to say. I know our cohort and something doesnt match with Bocconis
HEC if French, Bocconi if Italian, either if you’re from neither country but if you speak even basic of either language I’d lean towards that uni.
True
this is the only correct answer. Would lean HEC if you’re neither French or Italian though
Thank you all for the very helpful insights! I add that I can speak french (b2) but I am italian. The decision appears therefore clear
I am currently enrolled in the MSc Finance at Bocconi and I was admitted to HEC MiM. If you go for Bocconi, be ready to study hard quant stuff for a while. Plus, notice that there are 200+ guys studying finance here. Competition is high even among us to get a cool internship.
Having experienced it, go for HEC if you’re not fond of econometrics/stochastic processes. Ar least you can learn French and do a double degree (that’s ultra competitive in Bocconi too). nevertheless, need to say that almost all the guys by the end of the 2 years find super positions in London or Italy.
I have a management engineering degree, so no finance experience, but I am used to do quant stuff. Going back would you still have chosen Bocconi over Hec?
Probably I would stay at Bocconi, but that’s not easy to decide since I’ve spent just a few months here. The only thing that I would say with 100% confidence is: if you want to do M&A/ECM/DCM/ER or something more related to corporate finance go for HEC. If S&T both as you have a engineering background (otherwise I would have said Bocconi). If AM/Risk Management Bocconi without any doubt. Nevertheless, lots of guys from Bocconi go in IB, but I think they could get the same job enjoying their MSc years much more if at HEC. If you have other questions feel free to PM me.
