Help me brainstorm a possible career switch

I'm currently in a profession (public accounting) that I have only lukewarm interest in. I've been thinking a lot lately about what else I could do at this point that would be challenging and fulfilling work.

My background is that I've been in public accounting about 10 years now and I've become pretty good at it. I have an MBA from a top 20 program that I received 3 years ago.

I'd be open to relocating to almost anywhere in the world. My preference would be a low cost of living, low tax area with relatively high wages. Some place like southern washington state for example.

I am still in my 30s but I figure it's now or never to make a lasting career change. I guess my question is what opportunities would even be open to someone with my background that won't be setting me too far back in my career. Also, how can I find the right company to even work for? Career advancement is very important to me.

What about GE's CAS group? That always seemed to me a very cool thing to do if you did not have a family / anything tying you down. I remember talking to a former of the team at an OCR event about doing one quarter in each of a number of very interesting European places (Istanbul and Estonia among them, if I recall correctly)

I think it is typically intended for their finance leadership program grads, but it sounds like you have may have the skillset if it interests you

My understanding is that this kind of programmes are mainly for freshly minted MBAs/grads with 3-5 yrs work exp. 10 yrs maybe a bit too senior for them? We have the same sort of thing in London offered by BP etc. Couple of my friends got in but they are all fresh master grads with around 2-3yrs exp.

But again, maybe its different in the US than UK.

Dear tr7111 I have the exact same concern as you do. Im yr 8 in my career, coming from a big4-audit background, then switched to IBs working in finance/treasury functions for 4/5 yrs now. I just got my MSc finance degree and actually looking for a move. Im 30. But the big question, where to.

Hopefully we can figure out sth soon :)

You haven't told us what interests you. That is where I would start. Even if you aren't big on accounting if you went to work in accounting in an industry you find exciting it would likely be a much better fit. That way you aren't set back as much career wise and you can be in a more personally interesting field.

I am going to agree with heister. You have not yet told us what you are interested in..

Do you want to be a model? Do you like fashion? Maybe enjoy being a chef? Professional Pianist? (There was a story on here of someone who made that change) Maybe move into a marketing type role and slowly move into product development?

Lots of choices and you seem to have made good choices so far, just find what you enjoy and go in that direction.

Why don't you become an accountant for films? It would be creative and you could work on some really cool movies. Not a lot of competition in that field. Or be an accountant for the TV/Film industry. Actors have special tax needs.
