How can I pivot into mgmt consulting w/ my current background?
Hi all,
I have a background in politics (2.1 degree) from a top 5 UK university and am really interested in MBB management consulting. Can work in US or UK. Primarily interested in working in London. In uni I unfortunately was not part of any consulting society as I focused my efforts on finance; by the time I realised I might be more suited toward a career in consulting I was behind the ball.
I am finishing my undergrad degree this year (2019). So far, I have done 1 asset management internship at one of the UK's top 3 largest AM firms but felt the industry wasn't a great fit for me. This summer, I am at a BB bank in London doing a S&T internship and hold a full time offer from a Big 4 company for finance consulting services, however I am less interested in consulting on regulation etc and would rather be working on driving strategy.
Here are my long term aims: I do really like the finance sector, so I am hoping to convert the BB S&T internship to FT and do a 2 year grad scheme -- I think that I could learn a lot about financial products and gain a lot of commercial awareness, as well as improve my technical skills (coding, excel, math etc) as I come from a nontechnical background at present. Within the next 5 years, though, I really would like to get into mgmt consulting, with the ideal scenario beyond that hopefully finding a strategy job at a client.
Would the best option to achieving these ends be definitely to get an MBA at H/W/S in a few years? This option, while quite appealing, is also extremely expensive, so I'd rather try to do this w/o having to spend almost 200k as it's a bit out of my range at present (even if I'm very frugal and save up over the next few years).
Not sure if this is worth noting but I did get to Round 1 interviews with McK London this year -- unfortunately I was extremely unprepared for the case studies.
I really appreciate any advice people on WSO might be able to give. I know MBB consulting is extremely difficult to get but I want to work hard as I can to achieve it!
Hi sierrapii, any of these topics helpful:
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
Not really sure what your specific question is...
You got an interview with McK but were unprepared. So your resume/background was apparently good enough, but you did not execute.
Continue to improve your resume with leadership experience before the next recruiting deadline, reapply, and make sure you are ready for the interview.
yes you are good enough - just prepare for interviews next time.
