How to explain "counsel out"?
Counseled out after almost two years at a top consulting firm (post-mba position). I am having a couple of interviews with other consulting firms (of similar prestige level). How do I explain that I want to join them?
1) If I tell them about being counseled out, what is the best way of doing it with minimal damage to my chances of getting an offer?
2) If I don't tell them about being counseled out, what are the most plausible reasons for wanting to change the employer?
There are always people who change firms for various reasons, including after being kicked out by their former employers, so I wonder what do they tell interviewers?
As I said, the firms are very similar.
Figure out what the key difference is between your old firm and new firm , and stress it. Location, industry, work life balance, staffing model, etc. All the top consulting firms, while similar, have key differentiators.
The new firm would know anyways, all the firms know the timelines. So don't worry about it, and focus on what makes the other firm a better fit, kudos if you can center it around personal choices. Even better if you have experience in an industry the other firm is looking to expand it.
Why do you want to join another consulting firm?
