IB > PE > HF

It seems like IB to PE to HF is a common path for a lot of people. I went to a semi target, then a MM IB in Chicago, and now a LMM PE shop ($500M fund) in the midwest. With this background, do I have a shot at landing in a decent HF in NYC? Or are those roles reserved for the Ivy > BB > MF kids?

To keep this short, I've basically started to realize that the transaction lifestyle is not for me and I want to give hedge funds a try in the next year or so.

Nobody from my IB or PE firm has ever gone to a HF. Do I just reach out to head hunters and tell them that I want to interview for hedge funds? I've come across a lot of PE prep materials but hardly any for HF. Are there any good ones you would recommend?

A little bit of topic, but it sounds like you have at least 5 yrs of working experience, does it really still matter whether or not you went to target at this point?

Also, for experienced professionals like you who are looking to move to HF, how small of a HF is too small? I am seeing a lot of HF and family offices in my area with only 4-5 people (no idea about their AUM).

That’s the type of profile that we looked for when we were hiring (decent IB and / or some PE experience) and interviewed a few candidates like yourself so it’s definitely possible. It’s on you to be prepped for the interview and actually prove it’s a job you want and can handle and I only say that because everyone we met was a dud. You probably have the modeling down given your experience, just come up with a few (2 - 4) compelling, well-researched ideas. Shouldn’t be too difficult if this is what you really want to do
