IBD summer analyst in Asia

Hi guys,

I've recently been offered a SA IBD position in one of the BBs in Asia. I'm a econ major, so I don't have the technical financial knowledge that many of the b school people have. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestion as to how I should prepare for the upcoming job. Also, just general tips about how to survive the summer would also be appreciated.

Thanks much,
hhh12

brush up on chinese and get an idea of what you'll be expected to do over the summer (e.g. pitchbooks, translations, due-diligence calls, taking notes, running errands). 60% attitude, 30% 'competency', 10% market condition will determine if you get a FT offer or not.

your mission is to make the people you work with like you. Producing good quality work is a necessary, but not sufficient condition to maximizing your chance of retaining of FT offer.

Thanks ibhopeful! I'm actually working in a Non-chinese/HK office, but that was really helpful. As for the "attitude," what exactly do you mean? Do you mean soft skills like being able to socialize with the people around you, or are there specific things that they look for?

What bank is it? Feel free to pm me.

If you're working at UBS / CS - better get cranking on that Chinese no matter what tehy say.

If you're a relationship hire - ain't nothing to worry about

Econ major doesn't matter - i was econ and IR double major and its all fine. All the undergrad b school interns are annoying as fck b/c they think they know sht and try to act snobby whereas the liberal arts kids are quite nice / normal and try to learn.

Finally, if you're in IBD industry coverage, you're gonan be doing 1) making investor profiles 2) doing research / making investment pro con pages.

updating comps (which any monkey can do) was the "hardest thing" they trusted an intern to do ... unless they're really understaffed.

Th einternship is really a huge cost for the banks b/c they try to teach you so just be receptive and have a good attitude
