If Summer Analyst positions are still shown on the website, are they still open?
Hi! I'm new here.
I'm a junior at a target (HYP) who managed to bomb all of her ib interviews (goodbye, dreams of GS, MS, JPM, etc.) and is desperately scrambling for an internship for the sake of FT recruiting. Would also appreciate any advice whatsoever on where to look. Thanks for your help, all!
Forgot to add: "I'm sure 99% of IB firms are full now - boutiques included - but I saw that some places still seem to have Summer Analyst positions that, at least, allow you to submit applications. Are those legitimate, or did they just forget to close them?"
Only way to find out is by reaching out to them. Don't just send an app in. Get in contact with them via phone or email.
Thanks so much! Will do, if I can only get the recruiter to respond. Appreciate your response! :)
I'd also suggest reaching out to friends/teammates/extra curricular members who are in finance positions. They can often get you some sort of an interview (formal or informal), and you just need one to break in. I'm also at HYP and have gone through something similar (cold calling/alumni leveraging for internships) so feel free to PM me if you want more specific advice.
Sometimes BBs will not even look at online apps... The recruiters made me fill them out for technicality purposes before they could formally invite me to their super day. So like Loki said, it is best to contact them to find out.
is it best to contact recruiters or MDs? i find i've had more luck when MDs forward my emails to recruiters than when i send directly to recruiters.
Definitely better to sneak your way into interviews through MD contacts than HR. The higher up the banker is and the more they want you, the greater the chance you'll get an interview at their firm and ultimately receive a SA / FT offer.
I've heard that Houlihan Lokey SF still has an opening in their FAS division
thank you so much!
Most of the IBD recruiting is over, so even if it's listed on the website it's unlikely that those spots have yet to be filled. But there are definitely boutiques and mid size financial services companies still hiring for the summer, so I would just go with the cold call technique and get your resume out to as many places as possible in the next few weeks. I've heard of a few kids who got summer analyst jobs at boutique firms by using google maps to find boutique firms that don't have formal internships listed on their website and then emailing and cold calling them until they finally gave them offers. Also, if you're from a HYP, there's probably a good number of alumni who are MDs and above at either boutique IBD firms or HF. I know it's awkward but just search for alumni who are successful in the industry and then find a way to message them to meet for coffee and talk about their experience in the industry. It sounds cheesy, but a lot of the big boys (and girls) in finance are still super old school. Obviously it's harder than a resume drop but I'd definitely say that you're in no position to panic. Find those alumni and call them. Even if they don't have an internship open, they'll be sure to mention that you made the effort to meet up so someone who does have an opening. God Speed.
Also, if you know your stuff and you're just not a good interviewer because of nerves/anxiety, you might want to take a beta blocker or a Xanax before your interview. Sometimes the student health center even gives out the beta blockers to students with stage fright before presentations. Both work wonders. Just be sure to take a small enough dose so you don't pass out when your interviewer asks you for your stock pitch.
Hahha wtf.^ "brb need to go pop a few bars before my interview guys."
