Immigration Halt Effect on International Students and H1B Workers
According to Bloomberg, Trump plans to temporarily halt legal immigration into the U.S., and a draft version of an executive order would bar people from seeking a range of work visas in his latest effort to contain the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.
Does any banker who's currently on H1B visa worry about this? As an international with an EB internship this summer, am I totally screwed in terms of earning a full-time spot? Should I contact HR about this? Hopefully things work out for everyone but this feels like a nightmare
1) this is temporary but will probably go on for a while. nobody knows how long yet 2) do you already have your visa? If not: there are other things to worry about, i.e. the embassies abroad are mostly closed. At least some of the visa teams within the group are. 3) you can contact HR, I doubt they'll know more details. you could ask what their reaction would be though 4) I personally would suspect that with high unemployment in the nation there would be political pressure to avoid mass immigration. Obviously there is need to bring in highly skilled immigrants like doctors, nurses, scientists, etc 5) lack of jobs is a higher risk than lack of visas (but clearly no visa sponsorship is a risk as well). There will be a lot of applicants who are unemployed atm
I'm currently on F-1 visa and will be interning at a US EB this summer (STEM OPT eligible). Wondering if they'll stop giving FT offers to internationals regardless of internship performance because of the halt
Nobody knows details about this new order. There are a range of visas that are non-immigrant or have no immigration intent. Some are dual-intent and others are clearly immigrant visas.
This is a tricky situation. If a US citizen just got married to an alien, how would that spouse be denied a visa and ultimately a green card? wouldn't be fair. Same for nurses and doctors who are in demand right now, why would anyone kick them out?
You are in a position of uncertainty anyway since you currently do not hold a visa that would allow you to stay. This would be the group facing the highest risks of getting the boot. you would need a job, a sponsor, the right timing and ideally no pandemic. difficult.
good luck though.
Oh my, this whole year is a nightmare. Why wasn’t I born like some years earlier so I could have entered full time in 2016 at latest.

update food, health workers and scientists or researchers most likely excluded spouses of USCs most likely excluded asylum seekers most likely excluded
all other workers including H1bs included, most likely H1b's to provide additional information, most likely enhanced/updated PERM
What about incoming analysts who already applied for OPT? H1B can be dealt with once the ban goes away but OPT is more important at the moment. Any idea if that will be affected?
If you applied for OPT and USCIS have approved it - you should be fine. Do you have your EAD already? EAD goes through USCIS and, like all other employment authorizations, this could be a potential opportunity to stop it.
If you are in the process for applying anything else, you might be out of luck if filed after the deadline which will be announced soon. but 90 days is not too bad, IMO.
I applied a little over a month back. It hasn't been approved yet. It's still in process.
Let's hope that is all good then. if your role is within your area/the area of your studies and your DSO approved it, I don't see why it wouldn't work out.
Go to uscis, go into case status, enter your ISS receipt number and look it up! all data should be on there.
Unfortunately, in rare cases you can receive a RFE for OPT as well.
good luck.
We should be good. WSJ's latest article: [https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-order-would-temporarily-bar-family-m…)
Looks like temporary workers (OPT and H1B) shouldn't be affected provided they apply within the time limts.
Does anyone know if visas are necessary for a remote, paid internship? I currently do not have a visa for the UK, but was supposed to obtain it before starting in late June. Applications are typically submitted 2-3 months before programs begin, but obviously nothing has moved forward on this since the lockdown. My firm is considering shifting to a virtual internship, but am I allowed to be on the payroll if I don't have the visa?
The temporary ban only affects people looking to get green cards. F-1/OPT/H1B visas are considered non-immigrant visas so this doesn't affect those guys.
Of course, if things get worse Trump might impose restrictions on issuing non-immigrant visas as well but for right not we're in the clear
Yeah for now - I hope Biden makes it in November.
Now Trump administration is looking at suspending OPT altogether. Do you guys think this is likely?
Fuck just saw this - I'm still on my OPT. Such bullshit that people with jobs already have to worry about this shit.
Idk if likely or not but if it goes through we're all screwed
I just got my EAD (class of 2020) and start FT in July. Hope my FT offer doesn't get pulled wow
