Industry switcher needs some perspective
I have searched high and low and cannot find the answer to my two questions. I am hoping a more senior monkey in this community can help shed some light:
Background
I am an industry switcher from life science. MS and PhD from top med research school, two years at top pharma, now at top 5 MBA. My goal is to end up on buy-side in med and life tech niche, but hope to be able to expand my focus areas later.
Setup
I just accepted a summer internship at a close-ended fund that employs event-driven, value, and technical strategies with L/S used strategically. They invest in the public, private, and crossover space. It's a small group, great AUM, and a fantastic educational opportunity.
I plan to work hard this summer, secure a position after graduation, and continue there for five years. Let's assume that I contribute to generating good alpha in those five years.
Question 1: On WSO, they're listed as HF, but no other sources I've found from google relates CEF to HF. So, honestly, how close/far away is this from a HF?
Question 2: What's WSO's intuitive feeling of how easy/difficult it will be for me to transition deeper into HF territory for my second job post-graduation? That is, how marketable to other HFs are the skills I would presumably pick up in five years?
Thank you in advance!
No one has an opinion?
hard to tell without knowing a little more, PM me if you can offer a little more detail and maybe I can help.
Your experience is very relevant for the type of strategies you are going for. Try to learn as much as possible about investing at this fund and that would set you up for a good shot at a career in investing in pharma/bio companies.
Thank you BlackHat and jackiejackiejackie. I PM'd Gray Fox and am still waiting for a reply. I guess my real question is whether my experience at a CEF will be considered relevant to HF when I look for my second job post MBA. Per jackiejackiejackie, it seems as if experiences learned at CEF are considered acceptable resume currency to HF managers. Did I read that correctly?
CA85, I don't see anything other than a quote of my post...what are you trying to say?
Also, never heard back from Gray Fox.
I remember replying to this. It's happened a few times where I post from mobile and it deletes my text and posts blank.
