Is anyone else getting irritated with the frequency of "different strokes for different folks" on this site?

So I think one of the big users started it and now everybody says it in any thread where there is a disagreement. For fuck's sake...

Also looking for color on this. Let's circle the wagons and touch base with someone who can open the kimono for us. Net net, let's reach out and leverage our resources and share our plans going forward with a bullish attitude. Just keep it granular though, no point in boiling the ocean. Where the rubber meets the road, put down a full-court press.

How old are you?

If you're older and think you might have it figured out, you need to be giving us these speeches.

I will gladly admit that I don't have it figured out. I do know that it's probably not about money and it's definitely not about prestige. Not knowing is part of what makes me moderately depressed.

You don't need to be in your 30s or 40s to know that "Whoever dies with the most toys wins" is ridiculous.

.

Ok, so I'm not the guy you intended this for, but I think you bring up some good points that I want to address. I'm 35 years old and have been in this industry since 1998. (I know you know this, but) The thing that sucks, is that you never really have it figured out. I'm not saying this because 35 is so old (I feel pretty young). I'm saying this because I have worked with some of the very top people (CEO/President/CIO type in their 50's) in a fairly large Asset Management firm. I knew several of them well enough for them to take off their professional 'mask'. They are still learning...that is surely part of the reason they got to their positions. The more I learn, the less I know.

Regarding prestige: I remember when I was up for promotion for VP in 2003 or 2004 at a large bank...I thought that was such a big deal. Then, I got it and nothing really changed. Nice to have, but no big deal. I got fancier titles along the way, but never had any sort of anticipation like making VP.

Achievement is a fine goal. To the extent titles are recognition of an achievement, it's an ok goal, but making VP or MD or whatever will not be as big of a deal as people think it will be in advance. It ends up like an expensive watch, you like to obtain it, but quickly it just becomes something to which you are accustomed. It loses the luster.

The funny thing is as you move up in the firm, you find yourself in a position where you have a lot of people reporting to you, many of whom come from different technical backgrounds. So, many will come asking you for direction and advice and you barely even know what they're talking about sometimes. You end up saying things like, "well John/Jane, what do you think we should do?". This is how a lot of committees get formed.

I was just talking to some a-hole today who is in his early 40's who recently switched firms who was talking about the 'brand' of his new firm and the 'pedigrees' of certain people (I guess expecting me to agree with him). The guy went to a good B-School, but hasn't done shit since then and was looking down his nose at people more successful than him that we both know. What an asshat. I don't know exactly where the boundary for clinging to academic credentials is, but I do know that 40 is waaaaay over the line. You went to a great school, guess what? So did almost everyone here and nobody cares. What have you done for me lately?

This is the kind of prestige seeking that is completely and utterly ridiculous. Inexcusable. It blinds people to real opportunities.

I basically wanted to respond to your idea that life is definitely not about prestige and that nobody really has it figured out and then I got a little carried away with a lengthy response.

[after typing this, I realized I'm kind of giving a meaning of life post, sorry about that]

You're making a huge assumption if you think I'm defending the "whoever dies with the most toys wins" philosophy. I'm just tired of the people who think they "know it all" regarding what life is really about, the ones that post trying to tell other people how to live their lives, because they had some sort of realization that they were working WAY too many hours for what they received in return.

btw I'm from Oregon, I smoke tons of weed, and I drive a rusty 1990 acura with over 200k miles on it. So I'm not your average WSO monkey obsessed with money and money only

@BlackHat Classic.

But seriously, @SamuelClemens if you're older than a 28-year-old and think you have things figured out, please share with us. If you need help getting Patrick's attention for a front-page post, shoot me a PM.

Yes, it probably looks like the blind leading the blind in some sense. I would just clarify that us 20-somethings only claim to know that it's dark out when other folks are saying it's noon, not that we can see something.

Also @ BlackHat, that was a thought provoking video, thanks. I see people on this website everyday come on with highly ambitious goals and prospects for making money. Hell I've been one of those posters, but every time someone makes one of those posts, one of you guys that are out there in the real world come in and try to bring the poster down to earth. It usually doesn't work, but you guys certainly try. For some reason, that video just brought me down a notch.
