Job in White Plains NY: Where to live?

Hi guys,

I am close to figuring out where I want to join after undergrad. One of the offers is in White Plains, NY. I was wondering if you guys could suggest where to live or help me figure out what is best.

I expect to be working 70-80 hours a week. I have some really good friends who will be in the city I'd be happy living in a very small room I am a little stingy.

Option 1: Find a place near white plains/east chester/connecticut How expensive would it be?

Option 2: Live in the city Would want to live within walking distance of Grand Central or along the 4,5,6 line, so that I can take the metro north (30-45 mins commute on the metro north, depending on express/local) How expensive is this? What about if 3 of my friends including me try to get an apartment?

What should I do?

Like said before, midtown you're looking anywhere from 1.3 - 1.8k. I think 1 - 1.5k would be a little tougher to find a more 'decent' place. Most places I have found are at least 1.5k.

I can't really give you any input on White Plains, but regardless I would want to live in the city. The whole point of working around NYC is to enjoy the NYC lifestyle and make contacts around the city. If you work/live in White Plains how often are you going to goto the city? A few times a month? Not gona cut it in finance. You need to network.

Don't worry about being 'close' to a subway.. almost all destinations in NYC are no more than 3-4 blocks from a subway that connects to Penn or Grand Cent. in 1-2 connections.

I used to work in that area and most of the younger people did live in the city. I lived in CT while I was there. Most of the guys I worked with that lived in the city said the long commute was well worth the benefit of living in the city. However, I wasn't in IB so we weren't working 80 hour weeks, so I can't really attest to whether it would be worth it with those kind of hours. Most of the younger people out there had the general plan to work there for a couple years and then try and move to a better gig in the city.

White Plains can be a fun town though if you do have some friends there. Wouldn't be terrible doing it for 2 years or so and then trying to get a different job in Manhattan. If you do choose to live in the city though I HIGHLY recommend living within walking distance to Grand Central though, particularly with those kind of hours. That would make your commute roughly 1 hour or so, which isn't the end of the world.

white plains has a decent amount of things to do...are you from Westchester? There are some really nice places to live, and some not so nice. Decent nights out, bars, clubs, shopping (The Westchester has most 5th ave has), and restaurants are great. I'd say lookin at at least 1500

I live in the Bronx and frequently go up to White Plains. I can't really tell you where to live, but commuting from Grand Central up to WP everyday can get expensive, and if you don't get to Grand Central by 2AM (maybe even earlier) you're spending the night at your job or hopefully at a friends in the city.

Living in the city is what it is...I'm sure you've heard so I won't get into that.

Living in WP will definitely be cool for a 21-22 year old. There are plenty of cheap places to live compared to the city (probably find something for $800/month, even less if you get a roommate), there are two major malls, and Mamaroneck Ave strip has a HUGE bar/lounge/restaurant scene, something like 15 within a 2 block radius that is packed out every Thurs-Sat. I would also definitely invest in a car if I moved to WP, something not possible living in the city.

PM me if you have any more questions.
