Loafers VS Laces

I searched around and never got an answer that seemed definitive:

I'm entering my third year at NYU, and have scheduled meetings and hopefully will be involved in super-days. I really really REALLY love the feel and comfort of loafers but am worried they may be too casual. I currently can't buy both so I have to choose. My choices have narrowed down to:

http://www.dillards.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet…

(Both black)

Or

http://www.menswearhouse.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se…

Open to ideas. I don't know much about fashion and so I figured posting on this site would be a good idea. Thanks!

Sorry if I sound like a loser by making the above post. I've never owned a suit in my life and am fashionably challenged. I'm from the west coast and I learned the hard way coming out here that what I deem to be casual/formal is very different from what New York defines as casual/formal.

Just don't want to wear shoes that potentially important people in my life will look at me as someone who's not taking the situation seriously

Your right. Stick to laces, your always better to be over dressed than under dressed.

If your wearing a jacket, i.e. suit, then you need to wear laces. Its common to get conflicting advise on this site, however, its always better safe than sorry. Also, conformable is the last thing you want to be in an interview. You want to be confident and on your toes. I don't know about anybody else, but I definitely feel more confident when I'm lookin sharp. (Dont over dress though... no french cuffs)

this is different for everyone i think.

Many people are very confident when they are comfortable, other are better off feeling on edge. Knowing ones self and how you react to the situation is the best way to approach the interview/mindset there in.

On the shoes therefore: go with the laces you seem concerned with the image and if you can be comfortable in something you also think is safe then go for it. Also if you have never worn a suite, i don't think the hour -2 hours you are in it will really beat you up to be marginally less comfortable in lace ups vs loafers.

btw just a question... how often have you worn dress/polishable shoes?

Answering Matt: I've never worn polishable shoes in my life!

This may seem arrogant, but I'm extremely confident in my ability to speak and do the "interview" part of the interview. in fact, I'd feel okay wearing shorts and a t shirt and speaking so properly they'd forget I'm wearing that california style at all.

In fact, the above is my problem -- I'm very confident in my ability to speak, communicate, etc, but am fashionably stupid and don't want to mess something up via something so minimal. Though I feel in most industries it wouldn't really matter so long as your dressed nicely, it seems like (at least to people whom i know in the industry) that fashion DOES matter.

Having such a tough time deciding between loafs vs laces. I really appreciate all your input so far, but can anyone else chime in who's in the industry now (thus interviews people as opposed to being another person like myself awaiting an interview)???

@ OP - Get the pair of captoes; simple, clean and and doesn't draw any attention. Those loafers are a bit casual - people will react to them differently; there are a wide range and those aren't exactly dress shoes.

@ skibumm1n - how is wearing a shirt with french cuffs overdressing?

Best of luck!

Shoes and overall attire do not make NEAR as much of a difference as people on this site will have you believe. Avoid anything that looks incredibly flamboyant (when buying, think, 'what will the interviewer's reaction be to this' - the answer should be he won't really notice) but otherwise, just be yourself.

I wear loafers pretty much every day, and french cuffs more than 50% of the time. People will get used to seeing you in those and it won't be a concern for long.

I actually did that independently, before seeing yours. I always thought you stole mine, but was too polite to say something. Either way, despite the fact that it's an insane coincidence (apparently), we both look like huge faggots now, so i will change it when i get back to a computer.

this might be a bit pompous (and attract some poo), but I'd be interested to hear some differing opinions. for anyone client facing, I think it is incredibly stupid to wear anything but traditional lace ups to a meeting. I own loafers, and love them outside of the office, but when I have to present to a client/potential client, why risk it? I know some people (including myself) see loafers as more casual than lace ups, so why risk the chance of the person across the table perceiving you as too casual? the way I look at it, there's no way someone could mistake a pair of AE black park avenues as too casual, and since I'm wearing a suit & tie, I clearly want to be perceived as a professional, whereas if I wear a pair of bit loafers, I run the risk of appearing too relaxed. in my profession, people expect you to be dressed a certain way, and the last thing I want is for someone to focus on my choice of shoes. if I wear lace ups, I don't have to worry about this. if I wear loafers, I might, so I don't risk it. I'm simply hedging my wardrobe when I have to present. the rest of the time, lose the laces!

If I am wearing a suit I tend to stick to lace-ups. If I am wearing a blazer with a pair of pants that are a different color I usually wear slip-ons like a pair of AE Graysons.

oops! Forgot to mention I ALWAYS wear slip-ons when I am traveling because its a PITA to go through security with lace-ups.
