Media & Entertainment Banks
Does anyone know of any banks with good media & entertainment groups? I realize the BBs have TMT groups, but I'm talking more specifically about boutique banks. For location, it doesn't really matter, though NYC, San Francisco, and LA would be best. Thanks.
i am sure you knew this one was coming. Allen & Co. I actually don't know how good they are, but I heard that they specialize in this industry and people say it's up there.
The company doesn't have a website (if you search for one, you will find a company that has a similar name and it's a wealth manager...not the same).
Allen & Co is perhaps the most prestigious one. Can't recall the names but there are a few good ones in Providence RI and Boston.

i had come across this one: http://www.mediabankers.com/ and was wondering, as well, if anyone heard of them?

I know a few more, can't recall off the top of my head right now.
A, good old Allen & Co. Had heard about them but completely forgot about them. I don't really anticipate attempting to work there, but how would one generally come into contact with Allen & Co.? Through campus recruiting, or do you have to go to one of their alma maters and contact them? Sounds like a pretty tough gig to land.
I would also be open to hearing about M&E PE firms.
ib-wannabe, I came across DeSilva as well. It looks like a decent shop.
GCA Savvian also looks to have decent deal flow. Do they hire analysts? Based on the number of MDs and VPs in their U.S. offices I would assume they do, but they do not mention them.
Friends interned at Allen and Co primarily through alumni contacts. In fact, the alums contacted the student. My impression is that the position is VERY selective. Not sure how one would initiate recruiting without a prior contact or being contacted.

I read an article a while back and it painted a picture that only friends of the families of the current employees every really get selected. The whole article just harped on family ran business, friends of family, tight knit family, etc.
Good luck with that.
What schools are we talking about here? Im assuming everyone at allen & co are either from HY&Wharton
Savvian does hire analysts. Redwood Capital is another one. http://www.redcapgroup.com/about-redwood/
I was actually about to make this exact same thread. I'm going to be a SA at a BB, but was curious about researching media & entertainment banks/ pe shops.
A few I've found are VSS (PE) and Montgomery & Co (only in LA). I read a great article on Allen- it seems like it is mostly through contacts, and they don't really have many (if any) analysts (also I thought it was interesting that Bill Bradley is now an MD there).
Are there any BBs that have a particularly renowned media & entertainment practice (whether it is separate or within their TMT group)?

raine group or Guggenheim partners or BB for media banking
Has raine done anything since the softbank announcement?
that's why i asked the question-not sure
I don't know if you can really compare Guggenheim to Raine. Raine's still focusing on TMT while Guggenheim has TMT, Auto, Healthcare, FIG, Retail, etc. Also Raine's still exclusively M&A while Gugg does restructuring, M&A, and capital markets work.
BBs have a great media coverage.
gugg
Allen & Co
Um...Liontree advisors.
LionTree
CODE Advisors
BB if GS/CS/MS. If not, I'd go Raine if you have the opportunity to move/work on some buy side (not sure if how restrictive it is to get into the growth equity fund).
Allen & Co if you can get it and are specifically focused on media. Obviously GS TMT is a top group Street wide so there's that. Raine and MESA are other good boutique options

Hi all,
I am going to be flying over to LA soon for an interview with a BB for their TMT group. However, over the phone, I learned that I will be primarily speaking with the Media and Advertisement group there which works under the TMT group. I have very limited knowledge of the space and am not sure as to what to expect. In term of why Media and Advertisement, how it differs from other groups, etc. I was wondering if anyone could shed some insight on this topic.
Thank you!

Anyone have any sources for some info a the way entertainment media, specifically film studios work from a banking/deal perspective?
Thanks.
Also would like to know.
You're talking studios only, not independents, right?

Hey hey hey I want to be Ari Gold-alike too!
P.S.: Entourage is the only tv show I watch
Yeah, studios. But absent any other info, I'll settle for indies too.
Supposedly the financials are a bit arcane, so I'm trying to understand some of the major aspects of the industry.
would be interested in learning more about this also- somewhat tangentially, Portfolio had a good article on Hollywood billionaire Haim Saban and how he approaches deals (the article focuses on politics unfortunately)

Best Media Groups for Banking? (Originally Posted: 05/17/2010)
I'm looking to go into a media group in NYC or in the west coast. Who are some of the best? Where I can read up on the deals being done in the space. I'm having a tough time tracking down info. Thanks.
GS/CS/MS are always pretty strong groups. You can read up on some deals here

Yet another story of another banker to leave UBS. Yesterday, it was Bourkoff, today it's Stenzler. Not sure what exactly is going on.
I'd also be curious where you all think they will be heading next. I read somewhere that they might be joining Moelis. The article says that they are exploring a whole host of options inlcuding starting their own firm.
