no SA interviews..trying again this summer
so networked hard and couldnt get any interviews for IBD SA this past summer. delaying graduation to try again this summer. help spruce up my resume please and any advice on anything i can do from now until recruitment.
Top notch resume... for an engineering R&D position. I can see why bankers would throw this out. So much engineering jargon in there... They don't give a shit.
You seem like an engineer who was hardcore set on this path, and one day, in senior year, woke up and realized 'oh shit I'm only going to make $80k for the rest of my life' and now is trying for IB.
Why don't you want to do engineering? Serious question.
pretty much how it worked out actually. didnt learn about IB til jr year. got into the investments club and now i hold a position there and decided to pick up a finance certificate at the same time.
after interning across various industries, i realized engineering does not get any better wherever i go. low ceiling careerwise, dont fit in personalitywise with other engineers, really slow paced (1-2 years just to release an updated product), dont really feel like im making an impact when deciding which power jack to put on a radio.
i was always into business though, started a couple of small business in high school and doing something on the side now. i entered college in 2008...so i didnt think it was in my best interest to pursue a biz/econ degree in the wake of the financial crisis.
i tried to add a business spin to my internships and how i value-added. anything specific that comes off as too "engineering-y"
If you aren't looking into Trading it might be more difficult for you. Trading you can learn in a day with your skillset, but will never be able to "master" it.
I think it might be difficult, at this point, to get into the IBD, your best shot is going to be trading, so if you aren't focusing your efforts on that area you are going to have a harder time.
The frustrating part? IBs are looking to reduce trading as a percentage of their businesses. If the Volcker rule comes through unharmed it will be even harder.
Have you thought about just graduating on time and pursuing a Masters in Finance degree? You could probably still target recruiting for a summer analyst position since you will be returning to school after the summer.
MSF all the way with internship in between.
Perfect explanation on why not engineering. Just perfect.
not too interested in trading. ill look into a MSF as a last resort but hopefully i can get a SA this recruiting season
Your resume screams engineer. The person looking at it is going, "Wtf is this?" You can explore going for graduate degree or try to find alumni with engineering background. Some of them just moved up the ladder and eventually worked the business side of a company, go through an MBA program and make the full transition to IB.
Stellar resume. Instead of an MSF, you could also go for an MFE. I know a family friend that had similar pedigree coming out of ugrad. She enrolled in MFE at UChicago and landed a sweet wall street gig.
so im pretty much hopeless in getting an interview for sa as in impossible to not make my resume scream engineer? no matter how much i spin my resume?
