Off-cycle hiring
If I'm not going through OCR, what is the best time to apply? Also, does anyone who is currently working know if specific firms will be hiring this year or have interest in interviewing candidates off of the typical cycle in general? Thanks!
I know JPM and GS run off-cycle internships which have the same FT hire opportunities as their summer ones. MS may do as well, but dont quote me on it.
I am also deciding whether I should time my graduation to fall in line with the recruiting cycle in Fall for major consulting firms. My school is non-target and the program is part-time MBA. Does "being in a school" matter when applying for strategy firms or would it be OK to graduate the term before and then apply? Which one is recommended for someone who has a background in tech consulting and looking to break into strategy?
Off Cycle Hiring Help Needed (Originally Posted: 07/14/2011)
Hi,
I am in a rough situation currently in that I interned at a BB in summer 2010 but was planning on going to get a Master's degree in 2011-2012. But, my family's financial situation has changed drastically and loans are not really a possibility. In short, I need to work. I came from a top 15 ugrad school and have pretty solid grades but am concerned that no one is hiring right now. I have seen other threads in the past regarding early spring/ late fall hires but what about late summer? Where should I focus my efforts? Any advice or help would be much appreciated.I'm doing an off-cycle at a BB and asked HR and they definitely confirmed that they recruit into FT from off cycle, incase that helps in any way!
Off-season IB hires/recruiting?? (Originally Posted: 02/17/2012)
I have always aspired to make a career out of investment banking, however as a college student-athlete (at a non-target) I never had the opportunity to work any summer internships due to my athletic demands/responsibilities. Therefore since graduating a little over a year ago I have worked (at one point) four different internships/part time jobs (all in finance/accounting) simultaneously, to gain more experience and real world exposure.
However this has inhibited me from following the traditional route to an IB analyst position. I have certainly been working to network and meet as many people as possible, but could anyone offer any advice or personal experiences regarding off-season hires and an optimal strategy to obtain an analyst position outside the typical recruiting season? I am well aware of the competitive nature of this business, as well as current market conditions, but I have learned that persistence and thick skin are a necessity to succeed. I appreciate any insights and/or suggestions in breaking into an IB, whether it be BB or boutique.
Thank you everyone for your help!
Networking and being ready for interviews with relevant knowledge is the only thing you can do.
I would say if there would be one spot within the industry that may behiring it would be smaller no-name boutiques. Obviously some more reputable than others, but I would contact these boutiques and ask if they are either looking for an entry level analyst, or if your willing, an intern. Anything is good to gain experience / have a spot until your next position.
While it's expected that you aim high for the larger banks, the truth is that lateral/off-cycle hires in this environment are rare and on a case by case basis.
Additionally, I would say as an athlete, you definitely have a big leg up on the S&T side of the business.
I am certainly not trying to be picky but I am very interested in the M&A side of IB. Any advice?
Best way to keep track of off-cycle/irregular hiring? (Originally Posted: 05/07/2013)
So usually when banks need to fill slots they look for internal candidates, then look for people who have been referred by existing employees, then do the wide applicant search right?
So the only way to find out about these ad-hoc hirings is by constantly asking people in your network? any tips?
