PE Career Path after MBA
Can someone shed some light on what's the career path like after MBA? Recently, got offered for a 2+2 MBA program at a T15 school. If you do the traditional 2 year IB analyst and 2 year PE associate, do you finish MBA and recruit for Principal right away or is it post mba associate role?
Typically people are recruiting for VP roles post-MBA. Some firms this year were recruiting for senior associates post-MBA with potential of promotion after another year, but most people are going after the VP position.
congrats on the 2+2 offer
if you're already going into IB and planning on doing 2 years in PE before MBA, can't you get into a much better MBA program instead? Why settle for the T15 MBA?
IMO - pretty hard to recruit into post-mba VP from T15 even with prior PE experience. Should aim higher if going the MBA route. Otherwise go for direct VP promote or lateral as most funds have eliminated the MBA requirement if you’re sure about staying in PE. (Should do MBA if you’re thinking about transitioning or has other long term goals).
No such thing as T15 biz school. Outside MBA business schools">M7 recruiting opportunities drop drastically. 0 point in going unless you have the opportunity to place in the industry you want.
Assuming T15 is 11-15, otherwise you'd have said MBA business schools">M7 or T10 - options are then Fuqua, Ross, Tuck, Stern, Darden, Johnson. IMO if you're good / smart enough to get into a 2+2 and are gonna go do IB + PE likely, I'd aim higher than those schools listed above.
Thanks all. I hope to get into a MBA business schools">M7 but, the program that's being offer to me is on a full ride with 20k a year stipend while in school. Currently, 1st year ABL analyst at a BB, hope to transfer internally to Lev Fin, whom I have worked on several deals in partnership with. It's also the few lev fin team that does in house modeling and top in the league table. I have seem a good amount of MF placement over the last few years. Came from a no name non-target school, not even close to a state school. I'm afraid I would have a hard time recruiting for MF or UMM. Therefore, the plan is to do a 2 year associate at a decent MM. I plan to stay in PE till VP, love to get advice on whether you think it's worthwhile to attend a T15 B school base off my stats?
Is there any downside to accepting and ultimately not going?
No, I have already accepted. I think I can always turn it down. I was asking, so I can have better understanding on how the MBA to VP promotion work. Definitely ahead of myself, but never too early I guess.
