Penn CAS vs. Penn Wharton for a Transfer
So, I know there are hundreds of threads on this topic already, but for the purposes of transferring, I wanted to know what you guys think. I'm currently at a decent top 50 school, but as somebody who wants to break into IB, I really want to go to Penn. I've heard that CAS people are at a serious disadvantage to Whartonites, but at the same time, both are probably better than my current school. Should I apply to Penn CAS, get a high GPA, and then try to break into Wharton through the Uncoordinated Dual Degree Program? I think I could get into Wharton with my high school GPA, but my college GPA isn't a 4.0, so I'm thinking it might be a better idea to just start off in CAS.
From what I've heard transferring to Wharton is almost impossible. Plus, you cannot apply to both CAS and Wharton. If I were you I'd definetely apply to CAS because it's hard to get into Wharton even from other Ivies, let alone top 50 school.
Any one else?
Transferring to Penn overall is almost impossible. It has a 1% transfer acceptance rate. Unless you're a top athletic recruit that is transferring for sports, you're staying where you are
Not true. Harvard has a 1% acceptance rate. Penn's is closer to 9%. Still low, but not as low as you make it out to be.
I'm guessing this your source is that US News post from Fall 2012
That was over 3 years ago. I'll correct myself that it is probably not 1%, but it is certainly closer to 5-6% at this point. Even if it was 9%, that is incredibly low. Again, my point stands. Unless you are an athletic transfer, you should most likely get comfy wherever you are.
Fair enough. But 5-6% is certainly better than 0%. And you never know unless you try.
Is there any other advice you'd like to offer?
I don't know where you have heard it from but Penn CAS students are not a serious disadvantage for wall street jobs (this is is usually a rumor perpetuated by non-Penn students). A visit at the Penn career services website and a look at the CAS career outcomes will convince you that this is not true. All students have access to the same recruiting resources and actually everyone does very well. You will have less competition trying breaking into ibanking from CAS than you will have from Wharton, since there are many CAS students who are not interested in business, and you will stand out from the rest of the Wharton people. Recruiters do value diversity. Also yes it is competitive to transfer from CAS to Wharton, but it is not impossible or incredibly hard. There are actually many people who choose to pursue a course of study they are actually interested in, and just take advantage of Penn s strong business recruiting resources available to all undergrads. This is not like NYU where it is Stern or bust for business recruiting.
NYU CAS actually gets some solid recruiting, but yeah outside of that Stern and CAS, sort of shitty recruitment.
