Question Regarding Financial Institution Group (FIG)
Hey guys - I have an interview with a few MDs and I was wondering if you guys could provide me with more info into some of the sub-verticals within the space, specifically insurance and specialty finance. I feel like I have a broad understanding of FIG, but I want to know more about insurance and SpecFin as these are the two spaces the group mostly works with. Would welcome any advice, reading materials and tips to help me with this process. Thanks.
Are you lateraling? Analyst/associate?
.
Think I have an idea of who you are talking about and if I’m right they are a very nice group of people from my experiences with them.

For insurance, would suggest just understanding the difference between a life, P&C, and reinsurance company. Those are the broad buckets and knowing how each of those businesses work is important. Which has more of a balance sheet vs. an underwriting tilt is important and understand what are the recent trends that have been driving M&A in the space. Look at recent deals and get a sense for the valuation / deal rationale / go-forward strategy for the acquirer / disposer. Plenty of recent M&A in the public life & P&C space over the last 12-24 months to analyze. Reinsurance is more niche but get a feel for why an insurer will use reinsurance, how the companies are valued, and whether any of the M&A over the past 12-24 months has incorporated reinsurance and if so, how has it impacted the deal’s structure. For a lot of legacy blocks (at least on the life side), reinsurance is how transactions often get done as you really don’t sell legal entities that often given the issues associated.
On specfin, definitely a grab bag and the comments above are probably more helpful.
