What to ask when networking?
Two days ago, I cold called a boutique investment bank and asked for a 10 minute interview with one of the associates at the firm. He was busy, but surprisingly he referred me to an analyst. The Analyst emailed me and said that he would give me a call next week.
My question is, what should I ask to be effective? I want to refrain from asking things like "so why investment banking?" and "what's your favorite part about your job?"
Anyone have any suggestions that have worked well for them in the past?
Ask about a favorite/least favorite or most/least interesting deal.
Normal shit. Do you manscape. Do you dirty-box with your manpartner. I dunno. Normal shit.
Thanks for the advice David, I'll definitely incorporate that. Anyone else?
Bump. Also very interested in what to discuss during such conversations. Should you say that you are looking for more information about the firm, or that you are looking for a SA/ FT position, or something else. Thanks.
Are you looking for more information about the firm? Are you looking for a SA/FT position? Usually a good place to start would be the truth.
I guess my dilemma is whether being upfront is the best strategy (I will be a rising junior looking for an SA position next summer) or, as someone in another thread I found said, playing coy and hoping they ask for you to call or meet.
say "i am a rising junior looking to learn about investment banking and summer analyst programs for next summer."
you can ask your contact about what sorts of programs they have and how much money he makes and how much he hates being away from his family so much.
Well make yourself sound interested and serious in pursuing banking.
Questions like, "I want to do investment banking because xyz".... I think generally when you call them you're supposed to already be pretty verse in knowing what investment banking is otherwise they may think you're an idiot wasting their time.
Good questions to ask are: "Why did you want to do investment banking?" "What do you think my game plan should be from now until when interviews start? What are some things I should do to best prepare myself?" Try to get to know the guy and what always works is to touch on some sport topic. (Knowledge of college sports is key here, and play to the news items of his alma mater if there are any). Ask other questions but don't take up all of his time....
When you're ready to wrap up, say, "So thanks for your time. I was planning a trip out to NY (or wherever this guy is located) sometime this summer. Do you think we can meet in person for coffee or lunch or something?"
He will say "Yeah, just let me know when you're in town and shoot me an email." Now he knows you're serious about it.
Even if you aren't able to go (and I highly recommend that you try your best to meet your network people in person) it won't be a big deal bc he'll probably forget anyways. Hope this helps.
I think one of the important stuff is that you have to balance between sounding interested yet not pushy. i dont quite recommend asking about compensation, as you will not want to come across as "I-want-to-do-IB-so-that -i-can-make-loads-of-money" perhaps you could try asking how you can prepare yourself to better position yourself and what are the most common challenges he faces.
What are good specific questions to ask wealth managers when networking to land a job? (Originally Posted: 07/22/2015)
I am currently setting up networking calls with wealth managers and was wondering what good specific questions to ask to land a job?
One that I like asking is what made you choose "XYZ career"? You could even get really straight forward and ask "what do you look for in a candidate when hiring for position abc?"
Questions/Topics to bring up at Networking Events? (Originally Posted: 02/01/2018)
Hey everyone, I'm a sophomore at target school interested in a BB SA position next summer. Since recruiting is getting pushed up again this year and networking events are right around the corner, I was wondering if anyone had any advice on questions/topics to bring up at networking events? Any other general advice is appreciated. My past experience with these events is that they've been rather dry in nature and I'm hoping to bring up some topics more appealing and memorable to all the MD's, analysts, etc.
Some more background about me: will be interning at relatively large FoF PE firm this summer (>30 billion AUM). Also, I have interned as a business analyst at major tech company during my freshman year summer. Current IBD interests include M&A's, industry groups, and S&T.
Thanks for the help!

What is appropiate to ask. Networking (Originally Posted: 10/28/2017)
Hi guys,
I´m applying for the first time to SA positions (Europe) and I´ve recently sent some cold emails to some old students at BBs from my non-target via Linkedin. One of them actually asked me to send him an email in which I can propose a day so that we can meet up for coffee. This is the first time I´m meeting someone from a top BB, I´m not afraid at all but...
What can I expect to get from the meeting? Should I bring my resume and try to get an interview if the chat goes well?
SlikRick, pure crickets, that's where I come in. Any of these useful?
More suggestions...
Hope that helps.
Why not! If the course of your conversation with him so far has been hinting towards a professional intention, then it is understood to him. And the person seems nice to be willing to help. Good luck!
Networking with finance professionals? (Originally Posted: 08/27/2017)
When networking with different finance professionals in FO, MO, and BO, do I tell them the position I'm most interested in or tell them I'm interested in their position? For example, if I'm networking with someone in Equity Research, do I say I'm interested in Equity Research or say the position I'm most interested in?
I've been saying Compliance or Operations because I heard one of the easier positions to get. I'm trying to get my foot in the door in finance.
I always go with the person of interests position, unless I know them well enough to tell them my true intentions and just ask for advice/to put me in contact with someone in that position.
