I interviewed at a medium sized REIT on the east coast this past month (September 2012). Dinged, confirmed pay was $75k base (1+ years experience). Bonus would have been around $10k. Not sure about REPE.

The general norm for compensation at the RE PE funds my RE IBD analyst (1-2 years banking experience) class went to was $90-100K base + ~100% bonus (total comp of $180-200K). Some offered guaranteed bonuses. I've heard of mid-sized PE funds offer ~$140-160K all-in, but many pay in-line with the large funds to target the same talent pool. The diversified real estate investment firms (PREI, RREEF, Lasalle, Brookfield) and NYC REITs seemed to be offering total comp of $100-140K, much more heavily weighted to salary with little bonus.

Neal, I think your numbers are more or less right. My $100-140K was for analysts/associates with 1-2 years experience at diversified investment firms. The range should probably be all-in $80-140K for analysts through associates depending a lot on firm and specific situation.

OB23/Asian, the more selective analyst programs that hire directly from undergrad pay comparably with investment banking (roughly equal in salary 60-80K and then a bit lower generally on bonus, from what I hear).

I can't really speak to the specific career placement stats of Columbia's MSRE program. I can say, though, that there is a "track" of hiring if you're either an investment banking analyst, or if you get into one of the few RE PE programs that hire straight out of undergrad (Starwood, MSREF, Walton St). Outside of these pretty narrow tracks, I think the opportunities are much more one-off in nature.
