SMBC Nikko Americas Thoughts?

I am curious if anyone here works at SMBC Nikko America or has worked there before would be willing to provide insight on the experience working there (deal flow, exposure, prestige, etc). From networking with people there, it seems like they are growing fast which has led them to steal talent from elite boutique firms such as Moelis, Barclays, GS, etc as well as hiring a bunch of new analysts.

I would love to learn about people's current or past experiences there and if people currently on wall street have any input about SMBC's reputation on the block.

Check the LinkedIn company page for SMBC Nikko and look at people working there. Director and VP level people are switching from all the firms mentioned above.

What are your thoughts on the deals their team in NYC are closing though?

2020 deal when 7-Eleven bought Speedway for $21Bn. Obviously, they don't close those every week like the bulges but I was kinda shocked when I saw that.

To me it looks like SMBC advised on the financing of the acquisition and Nomura and CS were the M&A advisors.

From the press release, "Affiliates of Credit Suisse and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) provided committed financing for the acquisition. SMBC and SMBC Nikko also provided financial advisory services to Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd. in regards to the financing consideration."

They may get Big 4, but i don't think there's any difference between the quality of someone working at Big4 vs an analyst at an IB firm. They might not have the same type of experience but there's no reason why they wouldn't be able to pick it up, especially considering they have accounting knowledge which many people lack that work in IB.
