Sophomore with No Work Experience Looking for Career Advice
I'm a sophomore attending a non-target school (St. John's University) majoring in finance but considering on switching to accounting. My GPA is a 3.75. I recently started to focus on my career and where I want in a couple years from now. I realized that I wasted my entire freshmen year contemplating a major change to maybe computer science and not paying much attention in the business field. I spent my last semester applying to several colleges as I might transfer. This semester, I decided to get more active but didn't do anything. Now, I've never had any work experience in my life whatsoever nor have I been actively involved on my campus. I feel like it's a bit too late but I want to start working my tail off to get somewhere. I was considering on doing an unpaid internship but I believe that it's too late to apply to places. I plan on joining several clubs next semester to improve my weak resume. Now the main reason why I'm here is because I need some advice on how I should move forward. Should I transfer to a target school such as NYU or Ohio State? Should I just change my major to something completely different? Is there any chance of me finding an unpaid internship even though I have no work experience? I am in a really confused stage in my life and I just don't know what to do. I drive a yellow cab on the weekends to make some money for myself to fulfill my needs but I don't feel like putting that on my resume will look good. Any advice would deeply be appreciated.
I would look for an unpaid internship or at least get a job. Also, getting to a different school would not hurt.

Well, they are not going to be paying you. I would reference everything. Sports in high school. Sat scores and any current clubs you were in. If you volunteered at all. I would just avoid your kill ratio on call of duty or knowledge of Star Wars. Think of as many references as you possibly can. Also, if you made it this far without working odds are you know someone who is connected so reach out.

You're obviously doing well in Finance, why not just stick with that as a major. Couldn't tell you about transferring schools. Do get involved, don't just be a member, take on a leadership role.
Thank you for your response! My main reason for why I want to switch to accounting is because is because I feel like I have a greater chance of getting a job when I graduate with an accounting degree rather than a finance degree. Also, my current school has KPMG and PricewaterhouseCooper as internship partners so getting an internship at a Big 4 would be extremely valuable. Finally, with an accounting degree, I will be able to get a finance job but not the other way around. And yes, I will definitely try to have a leadership role in at least one club.
If you wanna go Big4 acct and they recruit on campus you're golden. Switch to accounting, do well in classes and rock the on campus interviews. If you wanna do IB or something then it's a bit of a different story but first you gotta decide what it is you wanna do.
Join greek life and leverage the network, alumni can make a recommendation and get you in the door when you would've otherwise been overlooked
I would have said this, but as a second semester sophomore his options will probably be limited. I would definitely try to get into greek life, but do not bank on it as your ticket to success.
I'm in a fraternity at a target and this is pretty bad advice tbh. Do not expect to leverage some magical network that will give you easy access to banking gigs just by joining.
