Summer intern: ibd vs Oversea intern

I am a penultimate student in Hong Kong. I want to be an investment banker, before that I may go to pursue a Master in finance in UK. I just got two internship offer for this summer the first is Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office at London, responsible for Economic research. The second one is ibd intern in a Chinese Bank, for Equity capital markets.

my questions are 1. which offer is better for ibd? unique experience or relevant experience? 2. Would the Internship experience in London lift up my chance to get into top Master in UK? 3. if my availability cannot cover the whole summer, would it affect my offer? my ava is like only 2 months because having exchange

I’d still recommend the IB offer unless you have reputable IB experience already. And an offer from one of the three banks the fellow below me mentions is quite competitive in HK. I have even seen guys with one of these SA offers got FT at BB without masters.

ADD: If you applied through open channels, it’s less likely for HR to accommodate your availability. But I don’t recommend going to HR and explaining straightaway either.

it'd be helpful if you could share a range of the IB firm you're offered. CICC and CLSA are great places as always and CMBI were on lots of IPO deals as well. Generally speaking the other large state owned merchant bank IB branches the ones worth going at this point are CCBI and ICBC. Chinese banks often have a less structured hiring program and sometimes its fine to communicate for a date that works for you, especially if you got the internship through a connection.

If it’s for CMBI then yeah I’m sure you’ll have a solid experience. A friend of mine interned at their ECM earlier and then landed off cycle internships at a couple other EBs and ultimately landed a BB. Though you’d have to make up the technicals by yourself in later interviews.
