Supposed to start in two weeks but I am concerned

Hola!!

So I have signed my contract earlier this year and I am supposed to start in London with a top firm in about two weeks. There are a few weeks of formal training scheduled. As of today's email, everything is confirmed(surprisingly enough).
What do you think could happen if the situation escalates? Would they postpone my start date or just do online training and remote work? I have no income at the moment and saving run out quickly in a place like London.

Has anyone in a similar situation got told anything?
How's the situation in your firm?
What could I expect as a consequence of this in the 1st year (especially if a global recession looms)?

I look forward to your experiences!

There are a lot of variables, including how many people are starting with you.

If the situation escalates, such that no physical on boarding training is possible and a large group of people are joining with you, I can imagine they'd push back the start date.

If there are only 1-2 people, they can do ask you to do most of the training online and staff you on proposals/ business development work. Once things settle down, have remaining face-to-face training

Honestly, this is all conjecture at this point, no one knows how serious this is, how long this is going to last and each firm may react differently.

One thing I can assure you of, if your firm is truly a top-firm like MBB, I'd not be too worried about layoffs right now. Hiring and retaining the right talent is the biggest challenge for MBBs and they don't take hiring/ layoffs lightly

Thank you for answering!

It should be 10 people joining. It's not MBB but top T2. They are lastly growing and we fully sold last year so they had a very large hire this year. The emailed me yesterday to confirm but still saying things may change regarding the training, No mention about postponing though

I think anyone answering this would only be speculating as to actions that will be taken by your specific firm, but I haven't heard of any firms withdrawing offers or freezing hiring over the virus. Take a deep breath, and a good luck :-)
