Read up on Mexico's biggest MFI Banco Compartamos, S.A. Read up on Mohammed Younis. Check out www.kiva.org. MF is growing very fast in India, so read up on India-focused MFIs. Read "The Fortune at the Base of the Pyramid" by C.K. Prahlad. Lot of MFI activity is based on the West Coast so you'll have a lot more luck over there than on the East.

Does anyone here have info on a career in Microfinance i.e. Comp, responsibilities, Career track, how to break into the industry etc ? I'm looking for info on both Pre and Post-MBA positions. Does anyone here work at or know anyone that works at a firm like Microvest, Grameen etc ?

What is the typical background of people working in microfinance? At the moment I have offers for equity research at a BB or IBD at a smaller player. Which one would be better to be able to move into microfinance later in my career? Thank you.
Microfinance firms according to a past professor of mine don't generally target traditional IBD analysts, a lot of the work they do is operational and regulatory. That being said I'm sure either of those would be a great way to get experience in finance in general, microfinance traditionally isn't as competitive since it's a less orthodox career path and less lucrative.
I'm not sure you completely understand what microfinance is. It is much more commerical banking than investment banking or ER.

I've been reading here and there about microfinance investing and most funds seem to hoover around a ~4.5% yearly return on average in 2012. I do not know how they account for risk, but it does not seem like many funds had either a spectacular year nor a disastrous one. This is dwarfed by the return on the biggest traditional hedge funds during the same year, but it still beats the HF industry average of 1.3% in 2012 (BusinessInsider article).
How would you explain this lower dispersion around a higher average ? Can it be explained solely by their smaller size (and higher manoeuvre potential) ?
I'd say they're jumping on the emerging economies bandwagon. An EM fund focused on "safe" LatAm and Eastern Europe would do better than microfinance funds with a good bet on equities or FI (arbitrage between similarly rated bonds in different countries for example).
Everyone's doing that. Bigger funds do not limit themselves to US/EU/Jap, especially not in the last 5-10 years.
Imagine a VC shop with 500 smaller investments instead of 10 big ones. This diversity helps them avoid a big fluke. The smaller size helps since they can be picky on their investment opportunities.
