This is bullshit. Any advice?

Hey WSO just wanted to get something off of my mind. I am currently recruiting for SA 2022 positions and I have been unlucky/failed to meet standards in some of my interviews. I still have a decent number of processes left, however, I am exhausted. To give you an example of when I mean I got "unlucky", I will talk about my interview experience with one of the banks.I will not disclose names.A boutique bank had OCR at my school. I networked with the MD and had my resume forwarded. Once first rounds came out, I did not hear anything back. I was pretty confused. I definitely went to a Target, had the high GPA and relevant work experiences, so I thought it was impossible I did not get through the resume screen after having a referral from a MD. So I emailed them one week after my friends received a first round invite. It turns out that HR had a typo when sending out my invite. So once my peers were scheduling their second rounds, I barely had my first round on my calendar. I had the first round, aced it, really enjoyed the conversation with the analyst. With no doubt on my mind, I waited for my second round invite. One week has passed, no words. I followed up and my interviewer said give it another week. Another week passed, no words. Then another. I followed up again and my interviewer said HR has been busy because of incoming summer analysts. Ok. So I waited for two more weeks to follow up for the final time. The final answer I received from my interviewer was that he did recommend that I move on to the second round, but somethings "fell through the cracks" because HR was also running the recruitment. He was super nice and told me he will try to see what he can do. I appreciate him and my interaction was 100% positive. So basically what I think had happened was I got dinged out of a process due to HR not being able to keep up with all their work. This is what I am speculating based on what my interviewer told me. Turns out they already had a Superday while I was never notified after my first round. Has this happened to anyone before? Just really frustrated with this entire process. Thanks for reading and good luck to everyone who does not have an offer in hand by no

Really not sure how you came to the conclusion. I was simply venting my frustration and asking for any advice from people who had similar experiences. Obviously you are not going to see the positives in me as a person from reading a post that was meant to vent some frustration while seeking for advice. I dont know why people like you feel the need to label someone based off a random post on an internet forum. No where did I ask if anyone feels like I am an unpleasant person to work with.

Because you don’t deserve shit but act like you do. You’re in college, have accomplished nothing truly related to the work you’re going to be hired to do and act like your holier than though before even being on the job. Be humble, grind for interviews like everyone else and if you’re truly a good canidate you’ll be fine.

Maybe it's a sense of entitlement that comes off in your interviews.

This is going to be hard to hear but I had a similar situation as an undergrad and looking back on it now I realize they were just politely letting me down. It’ll all work out in the end, don’t let this one stop your momentum.

Interested in code, market mechanics, and trading strategies!

Or maybe, just maybe, you're interviewer didn't want to be a dick and say you got rejected flat out and blamed HR. If they wanted you, trust me they would give you the interview.

You sound like you'd be a pleasure to work with, I mean come on your from a target and have a high GPA! Not to mention you're "relevant work experience" at some random boutique IB/PE shop where you did absolutely nothing!

Ah I see, so the more probable option is that HR messed up not once but twice.

Whatever makes you feel better man. Maybe loose the entitlement and you'll actually get an offer.

Do some reflecting - you're at a target with a high gpa and IB and PE internships, even at an MM firm... Should be getting interviews almost anywhere you want and should have an offer by now. At this point, not even saying this to make you feel bad as I know how stressful/challenging the recruitment process is.

You come across as someone who expects to get interviews or offers but did you network extensively? Did you prep your technicals enough? Sure it sounds like you have a strong resume but not sure why you can't get past resume screens then, has someone checked you're formatting? These are questions you need to think about and improve/adapt on. Not saying that maybe there isn't a possibility that HR fucked up but you need to change something because recruiting is wrapping up soon.

Get used to it. This happens on the buy-side all the time esp since we take over 6 mos to hire people from start to finish. You can ace the case study and still get dinged.  Not saying it’s right, but you are vying for very few seats once you leave the sell-side. Also, no one will care that you went to a target, we all essentially did at this level.

I had an interview with PNC for their "asset management group" internship during my freshman year. I aced the first interview and was subsequently invited out to their HQ for a superday. I went through my first couple interviews and felt pretty good about. I get to my third interview, and I see my education section circled in red ink. The first question I got was "so it says here that you're graduating in May of 2021... how many years of college have you completed?". I told them (2 on 1 interview), truthfully, that I was a freshman. The interviewers both seemed seemed pretty taken aback, albeit in an empathetic way. They told me that their internship was mostly for juniors, but that they would likely take on a few sophomores as well. Needless to say, I did not get the offer.

Moral of the story: HR is pretty retarded (hence, why they work in HR) but there are plenty of other retards out there (went through a lot of people before I talked to those specific interviewers). Perhaps your interviewer lied to you. Maybe he told you the truth. Does it really matter? Sack up, and go get your fucking offer from another firm. If you want more moral support/advice, then just ask. Happy to write a book.

No I am not asking for moral support. I am asking if anyone has had a similar situation where they were dinged because of miscommunication and the outcome of it. Just got accelerated to their Superday for their second wave so no biggie anymore.

Honestly, you're just gonna get unlucky in this process. But it goes both ways, you will get lucky at some point as well! When I was gunning for my current junior internship, I had an interview at a BB that went flawlessly. The interviewer and I both had some good laughs throughout the interview and he told me at the end that he really enjoyed the conversation and I did a great job. I got a call 30 min later from HR saying that I would not be moving forward. I emailed my interviewer, inquiring why I hadn't moved on. He called me and straight up told me that MDs had already chosen who they wanted and he really had no say unless the MDs choices royally screwed up in their interviews. Idk if that was true but if he lied to me over the phone, then I guess he has a bright future in sales lol. But that was me sort of getting unlucky.

Fast forward to my interview with the EB that I'm now interning at. My last interviewer of the superday was an MD and he had me as his last interview for the day. We were scheduled for 30 min but since he had nothing else to do that day, we ended up going for 1hr 15min. Basically he didn't let me leave the call until he really thought he understood what kind of person I was. In other words, I got lucky by being scheduled for this guy's last interview of the day. I don't think I would have gotten the offer if I just talked to this guy for 30min, I just don't think I showed enough in the first 30 min to get the offer. But for no reason besides the fact that I was his last interview, he added on 45min and that extra time obviously let me show my real personality and we clicked after that. I got a call one week later from him saying he enjoyed our conversation, he thought I had the skills to do the job, the team would be thrilled to work with me, and the offer was mine if I wanted it.

I hope from these two anecdotes you can see that you will most likely get unlucky and lucky in this process. I think the key is to not dwell too much on the unlucky times and take full advantage of the lucky times. And most of all, keep networking and don't stop recruiting no matter how late in the process you go. I think people who really want this job end up getting it.
