To those in PE, GE, Late Stage Venture - do you feel always on call?
Would be really helpful to hear from you guys, and if comfortable to share what kind of firm you’re at (e.g. MF PE, MM PE, GE, etc.)
Do you feel the need to always be on call/ultra responsive? Do you often find yourself cancelling evening or weekend plans last minute?
UMM PE - yes absolutely. I think some of it is self-induced, but even on evenings / weekends as soon as I get an email I feel pressure to respond right away. If I'm at a dinner or with friends I feel antsy to respond, which is the biggest reason this job feels so unsustainable to me. Again though I think I do it to myself. If you can learn not to stress out as much and just be okay responding on your time I think the job would feel significantly better. Something I'm trying to work on.
Agree with the sentiment except that it's 100% done to oneself, as the working norms you describe are generally culturally accepted practices of most UMMs
Agreed. It's kind of like you can hold off on responding in those situations and probably won't face serious repercussions, but good luck getting promoted. If you want to be a star Associate you really have to play by those rules. So shitty

This. Expected to be available to drop everything if you’re late stages on a hot deal (or have some other legit deadline) but for one-off tasks without timing pressure a couple hours is NBD. It all depends on context and sprinting at every tiny little thing even when there isn’t timing pressure is a good way to burn yourself out and become jaded. Generally best practice to respond with a “Got it, thanks” so your boss knows you received the note though.
