Villanova v. Fordham UG

After being rejected from some Ivy schools I am left with two choices for UG b-school.

Villanova School of Business and Fordham's Gabelli School of Business

Villanova vs Fordham

Which of these UBS

  • Deutsche
  • Villanova is ranked 65th for recruitment at bulge bracket banks. They have the best representation at Deutsche bank and Houlihan Lokey.

Fordham has a small, but growing, presence on the Street within IBD and a very supportive crop of alumni. A couple of the bulge brackets now have a minimum of ~2-3 superday slots for Fordham students (semi-target is a fair characterization) and Fordham has placed well in diversity programs (that can often lead to a summer offer) for both sophomores and juniors.

I go to Fordham. I know kids graduating going to IBD at Barclays, JPM, and MM firms. I know people going to S&T as well, and graduates from the last few years who broke into the industry. A little networking and a little luck is all you need. I don't really know how Villanova does in terms of placement. PM me with any questions you might have about the school.

Your hopes about working at a hedge fund are a bit too optimistic. Hedge funds don't hire from Undergrad (at least very few and from top schools)...and yes the skills you gain by doing IBD or trading are very valuable and you will not learn them by yourself or in class.

Fordham is expanding and opportunities are better now, but mostly for BO and MO (with some FO for top guys). Even though you live in metro area, Fordham is still at a huge advantage in terms of networking. You can schedule meetings with alums during semester and have internships in the city during school.

Fordham has no party life, while Villanova is much more fun, but is also full of idiots! Villanova might have better faculty and infrastructure, but it won't necessarily give u a better education, that part is entirely on you.

What i meant was a better college experience at V vs F. But Fordham being close to the city has it's advantages in partying as well.

I'm a Cornell AEM student who transferred in, I just want to stress that its an extremely competitive program to get in and that you'll need high grades, along with solid reasons for wanting to transfer that go beyond the typical reasons of prestige, good IB placement, etc. The good thing is that they don't look at your SAT scores, so wherever you go just do well and write good essays and hope for the best. Also, apply to some more schools and don't limit yourself just to Cornell or other Ivy's there are a decent amount of schools that have good placement into IB.

Recruiting at Fordham is pretty solid in my opinion. Being in NYC and having a solid alum base definitely helps a lot. A good amount go to the BB's from here, myself included, and many others go to a slew of other notable financial services firms. The opportunities definitely exist at Fordham as the Finance programhas a solid rep around the city. Get a decent GPA, get involved, and be proactive and you can set yourself up for success. It's not an Ivy obviously so you definitely have to work a bit harder and really show your hungry but it is seriously recruited at for a number of places, I'm sure you'd be thrilled to intern/ work at.

It's actually not. I'm not sure if you're a Fordham student, but the OCR is horrendous.

If you want to do Big 4 or S&T, come to Fordham. Otherwise, go to Villanova.

Cool thanks for the advice. So would you think Fordham > Villanova because of those reasons? And I am not sure if you know anything about the transfer process, but I have no clue what to do with my resume for recruiting this fall/spring. I wont have a Fordham or Nova GPA on there, only my old school which I don't want to list at all on my resume.. Any ideas?

I transferred the summer before my Junior year and was in the same situation as you. What I did with my resume (based of other people's advice) is to list both your old and new school. For the fall semester just leave out the GPA part under your new school and list the GPA that you had at your old institution UNDER you old school. This way there isn't any ambiguity for the recruiters and they can easily identify that you transferred.

Luckily for you (and was for me) most SA recruiting doesn't get underway until spring, so make SURE you get high GPA your fall semester at your new school. After the fall you can add that GPA under your new institution along with what you already have for your old school.

I know it's tempting to not list the school you transferred from (even after you have a GPA at the new school) but it'll prevent any "issues" and "surprises" when companies do your background check.

Also don't combine GPAs from both institutions and list it under the new school's GPA.

So you are saying S&T and Big 4 are the only opportunities available to Fordham grads?.. Curious where your getting that from

Not the only opportunities, but definitely the best ones. Hardly any IBD recruiting is done at Fordham.

Unless you count selling insurance at Northwestern Mutual an opportunity, then whatever works for you.

@broadstbully - hit up the Villanova meet-up this Thursday.

They really call it Vanilla-Nova. Nova was pretty fun and you can always go into the city. The mainline is family orientated so you don't have an urban excitement. The 5-6 bars that people do go to are fun though.

WSO is having a meet-up? I didn't see one, but I'm down depending on the time if so -- beautiful place. I would have gone there myself if it had been a little bit more urban.

And yeah I've heard Vanilla-nova too. Whatever suits your fancy I guess. I have buddies that go to St Joes who constantly complain about the lack of anything to do on the mainline, but it doesn't seem thaaaat bad. Go Jay Wright!!
