What would my job title be?
I work in a buy-side shop as an analyst. Its not a PE firm but its similar. All they do is acquire software companies and keep expanding through acquisitions. They do not sell any of the companies they acquire. They hired me as an M&A analyst but what would be the best way to spin this job title to transition to Investment banking or PE? Thank you.
Adding some sort of fluffy qualifier to an "analyst" position listed on your resume or LinkedIn profile is not going to serve as a catalyst for securing a job in IB or PE. Your experience, skill-set and personal qualities are what matter.
Investment Analyst
Corporate development. You work in corporate development. If they don't plan to exit (i.e., sell the companies) then they're not PE. If you don't work at an investment bank then you're not an investment banking analyst.
This^ Basically corp dev at a holding company.
Since most people will see through any fluff I would also just put 'Corporate Development Analyst' and explain the role in details perhaps beefing up the description.
If you're asked what you do my girls at a bar fluff it the fuck up. 'Acquisition of software companies that are then not sold off but integrated - Analyst'.
Dazzle them with brilliance or baffle them with bullshit.
This is what bullets are for on the resume...to explain your responsibilities and corporate accomplishments.
Just to reiterate what others have said but I started my career as an analyst on a deal team and when I was looking to jump to the next spot, no one cared about my title but cared a lot about the deals I'd done and my responsibilities for each one. Then it's up to you to communicate what you've done and how it'd translate to the role.
Hello, dear! To be honest, I do not have any other ideas about your question but Investment Analyst, as someone has already mentioned above.
You could just go with "Analyst" as a title and let the bullet points do the talking. I don't think people will care too much about what you call yourself. Otherwise, the people saying corporate development probably have the right idea.
Oh, this thread is a year old. Nvm
