“Why XZY firm?” on-cycle

Hope all on-cycle has been going as good as it can for folks.

Where I’m struggling is when headhunters loop me into a process last-minute with a firm.
Then I’m meeting with a firm that seems really interesting, but having just heard about the firm shortly before being looped in, I struggle to give non-BS answers for “why this firm?,” “what’s a recent deal of ours that interests you?”

any advice on how to approach these types of firm-specific questions? Should I not even be taking these interviews?

It takes two minutes to google a firm, and many have their portfolio companies listed on their website (and if they don't, then there's usually at least press releases when a deal is announced unless this firm is insanely lowkey which is the case occasionally)... You need to do a little bit of research and then frame it as "I read about x and was intrigued by y so I'd love to hear your point of view on z.." which shows you did some due dili and and then hopefully the interviewer provides more color.

Talk about how the firm's investment mandate / style aligns with the experience you have had so far (especially if sector focused fund). Then talk about a PortCo or two that you thought were good investments and then if you have inside knowledge, drop a line about the firm's culture using one of their inside buzzwords / phrases
