winter internships in canada question

hey monkeys, I am currently a final year student finish my econ degree soon i will apply to multiple universities in canada for a masters program however while scoping the Canadian market for internships I saw almost all major financial institutions offer winter internships for most FO divisions. Are these only for COOP students? because having classes in winter and a demanding internship is nearly impossible to achieve. So do people who are not coop students just don’t take any classes for the winter semester and do the internship instead? Any Canadian monkeys to give insight?

Most of the big Canadian firms (TD, BMO, RBC, Scotia, and CIBC) offer both fall and winter co-op internships for undergrad students. Depends on the school you attend but Laurier and Waterloo are known to have co-op programs where students take an extra year of school but are able to have semesters off to work an internship. Typically you have to be enrolled in an internship or co-op program at your school to be eligible to apply for these roles. I also know of some smaller firms in Toronto that allow students to work part-time for them during the school year.

ohh thats interesting because most big universities don’t have a masters coop program the only universities that I found were university of waterloo and Concordia university practically McGill,Ivey and smith don’t offer these types of programs. Do you think opting for a coop program is better?

Yeah usually for master's program you won't find co-op programs cause the internships are geared towards undergrad students. For a master's program, I wouldn't recommend doing a co-op but you should definitely look into doing a summer internship before the start of your master's program (if it's a one year program). So that when you finish your master's a year later, you'll have an analyst role. Also just as a heads-up, it's difficult to break-in with an economics degree in Toronto/Montreal since most firms like to hire from commerce programs (Ivey/Queen's/McGill) so you'll definitely have to network way more.

yeah thats what i was thinking because i really would like to go to mcgill and they dont offer the coop program but taking a break for semester and doing the internship is a good idea imo thanks a lot
