Would this be an appropriate use of the optional essay?

I quit my job rather abruptly earlier this year to pursue projects that are unrelated to my last job or my post-mba career goals. I was thinking of writing a few sentences about my decision in the optional essay but have gotten mixed feedback on whether that would be appropriate.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Sounds like an idea that could have potential, probably depends on how interesting/impressive the external project that you quit to pursue was. Can you elaborate a bit?

I'm paranoid about being outed, but my last job was finance, and the stuff i'm working on now is either totally unrelated to finance or tangentially related. Sorry i can't be more specific, but if i divulge more, i'm really afraid of getting outed. My post-mba career goal remains in finance but at a totally different capacity.

This one person whose opinion i really respect thought my optional essay didn't really explain why i left and actually raises more question. Tough to write a compelling optional because i was miserable at my last job and could not wait to get out and did not want to go back into that field despite multiple job offers since then.

Gotcha, no worries.

In any case, I think that it would just make sense to focus on the positives. Emphasize why you were passionate about the opportunity that you left to pursue, and then you don't need to dwell on the negatives of your prior job. Show why your passionate about the new thing you're doing and talk about where you plan to take it in the future?

No need to be paranoid. We all know that you are Brady / Devolution / Shawshank from GMATClub. If this post is any indication, you are interested in social impact investing.

Funny, a few months ago you were ripping on NYU under the username Devolution, but now you are suddenly interested in it according to your recent posts on GMATClub. And you are not applying to HBS either.

Your strategy is painfully obvious to us by now:

1) Rip on every school but HBS on the MBA forums. 2) Praise HBS and only HBS 3) Hope everyone believes you and only applies to HBS, reducing your competition in this year's applicant pool, thereby granting you a higher chance of acceptance.

Stop while you are ahead dude. Good try though. Now we know that all of your stories about "a friend who told me about X Y and Z" and "email from HBS student" are all BS. You think you can lie to us and get away with it? From your background, any Adcom could easily spot your application from your essays, background etc, and should absolutely reject you because of the comments that you have made in the past. How would I feel as a member of the adcom if I knew that you were ripping on my school online? Do you really think I would put your application in the accept pile?
