WSO Updates & Coming Soon
Fellow Primates,
I just wanted to give you a heads up on a few changes we just pushed to the live server and give you the heads up on some ones coming in the next few weeks. Would love to hear your feedback. Love it, hate it, let me hear it...
#1. friends / buddies. Now when you visit a users profile you can use the "Add to Buddies" button to add that user to your Friendlist block (on right side). We had this functionality for a while, but it was really hidden. Now when you receive a friend request, a notification will appear above all content until you accept or reject the request. We hope this helps users netowrk and connect more. Additionally, we hope soon to have a feed similar to FB that will allow you to only see the content (new comments, new blog posts and new forum topics) from only people in your friendlist. This will likely take the form of a new tab under Recent (//www.wallstreetoasis.com/tracker)....
#2. No title in Comments. In an effort to make threads easier to read and save vertical space, we removed the titles in comments...
#3. Forum and Hot Topics. In an effort to speed up page loads, reduce # of links on the page (bad for SEO when too many), the tabs now link directly to the views you are trying to see instead of toggling to a list of 14....we felt this was a good way to direct users to our best content whiles still balancing performance.
Coming Soon: New Header Design. Want less ads? Ok, fine. We already removed the top 300x250 ad above Forum Topics for logged in users, but now we are in the process of removing the 728x90 banner ad from the header region altogether.
In it's place, we will be flattening the logo so it is back to 1 line and giving more space to our products and services with "tiles" or icons under the primary nav bar, as well as giving more prominence to the search bar and social media icons. It's a bit scary to say goodbye to that add revenue, but we think with the growth of the WSO Company Database, Wall Street Mentors, WSO Job Board, WSO Guides and WSO REsume Review (along with all the affiliate deals we have under WSO Discounts), etc...that giving these products/services/deals a bit more prominence along the top will help us recover some of that revenue (and maybe if we're lucky, do even better). Ideally, this will also make navigation even better since we think it will save us another ~1/2 inch in vertical space with a slightly smaller logo, etc...this will bring content up higher on the page and make it more readable.
Mobile WSO: No apps, but pretty on all phones One of our users is helping WSO go mobile. It wont require an app and hopefully will work as advertised. This should make it so if your office blocks WSO, you can still browse and contribute with ease on your android, iphone or blackberry....
Will keep you updated. Back to work.
-Patrick
you finally gona remove those titles...
An alert when someone quote us.
quantnet.com
^I agree with Abdel, quote notifications would definitely be helpful. Changes sound good - looking forward to the mobile site.
I recommended a quote alert a few weeks back in the site suggestions. Would help when topics get 100+ replies and you need to go ape-sh*t on someone who didn't agree with you :O
Oh man, I saw the "pending friend request" thing and clicked it and I had requests from literally 5 years ago. Holy shit! To be honest, I didn't even really know we had a friend function, good to know.
ha, hilarious...think i had a few that was 2-3 years old. I think 99% of users didnt know we had this function.
My fault...trying to clean up our act and get things working as close to 100% as possible. It was almost completely hidden before.
As far as notifications, you can click the "notify me when new comments are posted" to any thread, but i think you're asking for a non-email notification like the friend one? like an alert on WSO?
Thanks, Patrick
''notify me when someone quotes me''
Sounds great!
woooo
good stuff... why get rid of the ads though? I don't mind them, this site's pretty tame when it comes to ads already. Hope it works out though.
l love WSO
This could really hurt my feelings if people aren't going to want to be my friends. At least now I can pretend people like me :(
Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat worms. Props to those of you that know the song.
I really like the 'somebody quoted you' idea. My biggest desire is an app though. I do what I can when at work, but I got a pretty visible screen in a trafficked area, so if I'm posting it's really easy for someone to see I'm on a forum and what forum.
Keep up the good work, Patrick.
This page lists the requests you received. You have no incoming requests.
I'll cosign the iphone APP as well as quote notification. Good stuff
Thanks for the heads up.
Really like the changes. I don't particularly mind the ads. One feature that I think would be cool is allowing users to create their own folders to organize bookmarks.
The advertising on this website is very low key and not as in your face as most other sites. Don't take the ads down if it might hurt the site in the big picture.
That's what I'm thinking, I mean I don't know anything about running a website, but I can't imagine anybody getting upset at the small amount of ads on here. He did mention getting more space to advertise what the site's selling, which makes sense because I barely ever notice where it says "database modeling mentors" etc. but some bigger or bolder words in a different font would probably grab my attention. That's just me though.
lime, i agree, but I am personally of the opinion that our own products & services (if given the proper spotlight) SHOULD perform better or close to as good as the ads. If we lose~$2k/month from the switch but are able to deliver a better user experience, that's a trade we can handle right now....if it ends up losing us more like $5k/month, that would hurt (but dont see how that could happen). What I think will happen is that the # of people using our Job Board, Resume Review, Wall St Mentors, etc. will jump significantly and offset much of the lost ad revenue.
Additionally, I think it's confusing for new users to see a small WSO logo to the left and an enormous 728x90 banner ad. We will still be keeping the 468x60 ads within the threads, the 300x250s in the right columns and the big ad below the post box for our financial modeling training affiliate.
Revenue is doing fine, but I think a focus on our products and services (and affiliates) will be better for WSO long term. A lot of people don't even know about our WSO Discounts page: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/wall-street-oasis-discounts for example.
Thanks for the concern, Patrick
Small detail in the format of comments. The original thread posts have a small space between the author/industry/RSS/rank/banana points/time & date and the content, but the comments don't, which makes it look a little awkward.
The "new" flag that denoted the unread posts in threads has disappeared. I really liked this. Hope it can be added back in.
working on getting some sort of notification back so you know what comments are "new" and getting the "new" links working again.
New Header is live with no ad. Hope you guys like the tile / modular look.
Thanks, Patrick
The "x new" links should be working again. Sorry about that. These let you jump directly to any new posts in the Recent Tab or My Recent tab.
While we didn't put the red "new" back in, what we did was a bit more subtle (and we think cleaner solution). When you are on a page, comments you have already read show up slightly darker grey and new comments are the same / light grey they were before.
So if you are using the "new" links you shoudln't have to worry about this, but if you prefer to just click into a thread and scroll down you will easily be able to see when the new comments start (they will look lighter).
That work? Patrick
This is a great solution. However, the grey isn't quite pronounced enough in my opinion. It is hard for me to tell where the old comments stop and the new comments begin. Can you darken it?
Awesome, I am LOVING these changes! I sent a bunch of people friend requests just to test it out a while back, so if you're wondering who the hell I am, no need... haha
D M, I think you might have forgotten to hit "send" when you were sending me one of those friend requests... :(
My worst fears are being realized! Now where are those damn worms....
Fixed haha
Is there any way to create this from the site map for the site: Forums > Related Topics > Networking Events > By Major Cities. My goal to encourage fellow Monkeys to post relevant industry conferences, company informational sessions, career fairs, professional networking events, and social happy hours, which we can aggregate to create a social calendar for all of us.
This would greatly facilitate fellow Monkeys to get offline (particularly students) to meet with industry professional that can help them with their career. And save the troubles for working Monkeys from actively looking for social events to chill and mingle with fellow Monkeys. I would be more than happy to list weekly social events around New York City area. Thanks.
Yes, this is in the queue, we are just way backed up right now. Trying to get a new "my feed" page done and ability to not just friend but follow any users you want.
Thanks for taking time to respond to my request. I appreciate it.
Much better. Thanks Patrick.
