Wearing a T-shirt under a dress shirt?
I know it is completely about self preference when it comes to wearing a t-shirt under a dress shirt...but just as a side note, if your office is a business casual setting, does it look stupid if you can see a white undershirt under your dress shirt?
You see his white undershirt clearly. Would it be better to wear a V neck? What if you have chest hair?
Sorry if this sounds stupid, just not 100% sure if this is really something I can just play off.
What to Wear Under a Dress Shirt?
As OP mentions, it is a personal preference, but here are some tips from the WSO community on undershirts:
Do
- Go with a no-show undershirt
- Go with a moisture-wicking undershirt for comfort and not destroying your dress shirts
- Consider wearing a wife beater which you can’t see
- Find shirts that button high on the second button so it doesn’t show your chest if you a worried about chest hair
- Wear a v-neck undershirt
- Purchase light gray undershirts as they won’t show through much if at all
Don’t
- Wear crew neck undershirts if the collar shows under the dress shirt
- Wear a white undershirt under your dress shirt
- Wear undershirts with logos or designs on them
No, definitely do not wear a white undershirt under your work shirt if you are in front office role. I wear a wife beater which you can't see. If you are worried about chest hair, just find shirts that button high on the second button so it doesn't show your chest.
Do people in front office really care if you've got chest hair showing? I would have thought a bunch of grown men couldn't care less. I'd seriously like to know.
The gays are in FO.
No, don't care, but OP asked about it specifically.
All I can say is don't wear a shirt with a design on it. Some schmuck came into the office (I'm in ops) wearing a shirt from his high school underneath his dress shirt.
Wear a V-Neck under shirt. If you don't want chest hair showing button all except the collar
This is my view of the situation which has been covered ad nauseam on this board:
In the FO work environment, you should go with a no show undershirt. Unless you're part of that whole Yale thing you're probably going to want a moisture wicking undershirt for comfort and not destroying your dress shirts. If you have ridiculous matted chest hair that causes you some sort of anxiety, just shave it off, or as a poster above mentioned, get shirts that button higher at the 2nd button. Don't wear the crew neck undershirts as in the picture linked. It looks like 7th grade picture day shit.
In the nightlife/weekend scene do not wear any undershirt. You may sweat in crowded places, but who GAF, it might even give off some pheromones. Also, I often like to unbutton another down on shirts in the summer.
What "Yale" thing? Do Yalees take pride in showing sweat and/or destroying dress shirts?
that white shirt is making me cringe. own your chest hair.
if you're going to do this, just be sure you go all the way. cargo shorts, socks w/sandals, V-card, the whole 9 yards.
seriously dude?
socks with Teva's
brb starting a company specializing in no show moisture wicking undershirts for FO gays
private equitayyyyyyy
Def wouldn't be caught dead in Haaaaaaaynes
I think it looks stupid but nobody really gives a shit. Wear whatever you want.
I don't have man-boobs so I don't need an undershirt. Seriously, no one should be allowed to wear an undershirt at the office. T.T
wear V necks. I hate not wearing anything under my dress shirt. with v necks though nothing shows and your fine. I admit it does look bad when people wear white T's and you can see the T shirt collar under the dress shirt.
the fact that this is even a question shows how ridiculous american dress style is
Oh sh*t, shots fired! haha
Mr. Jones undershirts. Tailored, V-Neck, Tone Color.
these are awesome. well worth the extra $$
Mr. Davis?
That's the one
No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. "What if you have chest hair?"??? Obviously keep it under control if it's super bushy but otherwise what's wrong with that?
V or deep v
At my university, we call those who do this GEEDs. See explanation below:

I remember my 1st year in college too
Wear a v neck. Best color to get is light gray as it won't show through much if at all.
Wear a V neck. Just a side note, Don Draper wore undershirts, I think you'll be fine.
If you sweat a lot, please wear a deep V at minimum. Need to soak up that sweat.
PS -- So glad such an important topic has so many comments.
I wear the undershirt from NVSBL. It has a deep v-neck and is beige so you can't see it through your dress shirt.

I read somewhere you should wear the color that matches your skin tone. Do you guys do that or should I just stick with white?
