AM in Canada - Is the CFA Required?

Hi,

To those of you who work in AM in Canada. Is the CFA a requirement to manage money?

I thought I've heard before that in order to register with the OSC (or any other province) as a Portfolio Manager and handle client money, you need the CFA designation as a proof of qualification. I can't seem to find any sources on the OSC website to confirm this though.

Looking at the profiles of various PMs at large AM shops in Toronto, it would appear +95% of them have CFAs. However, not sure whether this is because it's a requirement or just because it's a "nice to have".

If you have any insight please let me know.

Thanks!

At the Analyst level it's usually one of the requirements in the job description. "Must be enrolled or currently pursuing the CFA designation" etc. 99% sure it's mandatory and/or expected as a PM.
