Barings Investment Management Internship

Next summer I'll be doing one of the Barings IM internships -- not on high yield or RE -- in NYC. Would love any info or advice from past participants or to connect with anyone else doing this internship next summer!

I've also been looking into potential exits for full time analyst programs on LinkedIn, is the Barings name good enough for me to lateral up?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice regarding lateraling and the value of the Barings name:

  1. Lateral Opportunities:

    • Timing: It's generally recommended to have 9-12 months of experience before making a lateral move. This duration helps in building a solid case for your transition and ensures that the new firm doesn't perceive you as someone who jumps frequently.
    • Job Search: Actively search for lateral positions by setting up notifications on job aggregators like LinkedIn or Indeed. Additionally, reach out to friends or cold email other banks to uncover unadvertised opportunities.
  2. Barings Name Recognition:

    • Transferable Skills: The skills you gather at any reputable firm, including Barings, are highly transferable. Even if you are at a smaller or less well-known firm, the work you do is often similar to that at larger firms.
    • Networking: Utilize your alumni network and connections within the industry to explore lateral opportunities. Networking can often reveal positions that are not publicly advertised.
  3. Exit Opportunities:

    • Building Your Profile: Focus on building a strong skill set and profile during your internship. This will enhance your chances of lateraling to a more prestigious firm or a different role that aligns with your career goals.
    • Strategic Moves: Consider lateraling 6-18 months into your time at Barings if you aim to set up a stronger buy-side path or move to a bulge bracket or elite boutique bank.
  4. General Advice:

    • Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated with the latest trends and opportunities in the industry. Regularly check job postings and stay connected with industry professionals.
    • Skill Development: Continuously work on developing your technical skills and gaining relevant experience. This will make you a more attractive candidate for lateral positions.

By following these strategies, you can maximize the value of your internship at Barings and position yourself well for future lateral opportunities.
