best way to track investment exposure for a small firm?

I'm looking to help someone develop and track investment exposure. They invest in a variety of asset classes. How do I go about creating a clean and easy to use investment exposure tracker/report?

Should I use Excel only? What are the columns to be aware of?
Any sample ones that I can take a look at?
