Break into Asset Management after 2 years in Equity Research
I have been in sell side equity research for the past two years and am looking for a switch. I am mainly looking for better work life balance... i.e., minimal weekend work, and 40-50 hours during a standard week. Is asset management an area I could reasonably expect to get better work life balance? Also, is AM a logical move from sell side research?
It's kind of different. In ER I assume you are told to do things and that's "work". On the buy side its a lot more self directed. I'm not doing work because my PM told me to do work. I'm doing work because I want my sleeve to do well. It's better work life balance in the sense that you have great control over your hours, but you will be thinking about work constantly. It's a results driven business after all, and if you don't perform you will be let go.
The answer is no, at least for any role that you would really want.
But it's all relative - what does it look like now?
